I want to purchase some headphones for PC gaming at LAN parties. I am looking to spend around $40. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I use Denon AHD-750. Way overkill, cost me 130 bucks but well worth the cash. Puts Sony high end headphones to shame, IMO. I do like the old Sony MDR-V6, but they are out of production. You may still find a set somewhere. The Koss PortaPros have good bass for a lightweight headphone also.

Try to get the kind that don't sit directly on your ears, cuz they start hurting after a couple hours.

If you want the microsoft gaming voice, which has good headset, someone is selling them in the sale/thread forum for $25 (new) quite a steal.

I'd probably pull down some Grado SR60's. They have a great closed deep sound. The higher end Sennheisers are open air, and that will annoy the hell out of other LAN boys... Trust me, I know :) My HD580's rock, but they are some of the most annoying cans around to other people. I just tell the others that i am going to use some 4 watt speakers, because these things are about as loud :)

If you dont want the Grado's, i would probably just go pick up a cheap pair of Denons off Pricewatch. They are nice cans for the price.

Or, try and get some Grado's used...

I just got my grado sr-60's after ignoring them due to price for over a year. Well, I ponied up and goddamn, they are amazing. So clear and beautiful, that I have to relisten to a lot of my music again.

BUT! I wouldn't say that they're great for gaming. When I think of gaming sound, I think of boomier bass and more thump-power to feel the bullets etc.

While the grados are amazing, they are a little light on bass, and also leak a lot of sound.

Still excellent, and for anyone wanting to really hear music (I would take a set of $150 grados over $300 klipsch 4.1s for music), a great set of headphones is amazing.

I read an article that said the SR-80s have the bass the 60's don't. I have Senn HD-580 .. slippers for your ears.

I've got the Sennheiser HD570's. Much better than my old Kenwood 610's. Very nice..Very confortable..But very pricy.
I've heard the Koss are a good pair for the price. Never had a pair though, but anything is better than the Kenwoods.

part of what gives the sr-80's the extra bass is the more uncomfortable earpad, which is like a donut made of a stiffer material.

Generally quite a bit less comfortable than the sr-60's, but the pads on both are interchangable and cost about $10 a pair.

No bOyA, you cant just talk to your neighbor. A strategic part of gaming is sound location. If I hear a particular sound a player made in a game I can usually pinpoint where he is and blast him. Headphone usage is crucial. :)

Also, at a LAN party, friend could be clear across the convention room. I have been to some with 500 people!
