Good FTP program for linux

well what do you guys use, things i need are


1. GUI(i need this )
2. Ability to share files on mounted drives(IE win98 partitions)



Thats it, im pretty sure it cant be that hard to setup, i have used serv-u and IIS before so i dont think ill have a problem, just tell me what to use

so you mean ftp server?

there should be one installed with your linux distribution.

rethink the GUI part...i have never heard of an FTP server for *NIX that had a GUI.

clients, sure, servers, no.

the default configuration should be fine too. all you need to do is set up a linux account (not an FTP account, just a regular linux account) for each person you want to be able to FTP in, and tell them where the shares are mounted. you could even stick a soft link in their home dirs that points to these shares, so they dont have to look around at all.

if you 9x c drive is mounted on /98, and you created a user "newuser", then like so:

cd ~newuser
ln -s /98 windows

(assuming ln sytax is dir then linkname...i always forget the order )

im using mandrake 7.2, with KDE 2, what ftp server is there.

Look for something called "ProFTPd" using RPMDrake. I'm also running LM 7.2. Another piece of the Linux puzzle fell into place with this thread. I was wondering why there was no entry in the KDE menu tree after I installed the package. Now I have to hunt for where it was installed and thrash it with the CLI to set it up. I'm glad I am not in a hurry. The How-Tos only go so far in illuminating the ignorant. Someone said learning Linux is like being relocated to a different city where you have to learn a new culture language and figure out the transportation system. I have to take these things in small chunks; one can only stand so many roadblocks in one sitting.

Any additional pieces to this maze would be greatly appreciated.

I think GLFTPD and BeroFTP have graphical interfaces.

Okay, BeroFTPD is not graphical, but I believe that there is, or used to be a KDE front end to it. Also there is a pre-alpha KDE front end to ProFTPD (my personal fav!). What's it called? What else...KProFTPD.

This, coincidentally, answers PCPligrim's question as well. The reason there's no entry for ProFTPD in the KDE menus after you installed it is because there's no KDE front end for it. Remember you're using a window manager, not Windows. There's an important distinction to be made there and you just learned it.

where would one go about getting this kproftpd??????? i cant find it, i found it on sourceforge but it has no files available to download.

If I remember correctly, you can use linuxconf to setup the FTP server that comes with Mandrake. And to share Win98 partitons on a Microsoft Network, your going to have to install and configure Samba.
