what do you peeps recommend for a good, free personal software firewall? i have been using zone alarm but was wondering if there was anything out there you thought was better. i had tried the old Tiny Personal Firewall 2.x but it doesn't like dual processors or ht processors as it will not work on my 2.8c or my old 2xP31GHz or 2xP3733MHz.

thanks in advance.

Since you apparently have multiple computers... have you considered turning one of them into a Smoothwall firewall?

Edit: Since you have dual processors you'll want to look around on the Smoothwall forums, I think you can get it to use them with the super kernel or something but honestly it'd be overkill... my Athlon 1.4GHz is overkill. Old crappy 233MHz systems with 64MB RAM run it just fine, got any of those laying around? ;)

Smoothwall

or

IPCop

The rig you are going to use is way overboard for a firewall. You could get by with a 486... I used to run a Smoothwall on a Celeron 566 so I could run it with super low noise.

software firewalls are a waste of time, I would build a nice router/firewall box with ipcop or m0n0wall. But if you dont have the spare pc, or the spare cash, check out kerio. It seems to do a good job.

I'm picky when it comes to software FWs and don't use one most of the time, but I like Kerio v215 (older version).

i should have been more clear, i do not want to turn one of my machines into a router as i already have one of those and don't need to have another machine running due to the heat, but just to go on each pc.

Blue Weasel: is kerio v215 a free version that is similiar to tiny personal firewall v2.x?

While a router/firewall box is very important and will prevent most of the major dangers from happening, a software firewall is needed as well to prevent spyware and other malicious stuff from being executed. It's possible to be safe and not ever have a problem with spyware, but if anyone else uses your PC I'd probably use Sygate or Kerio or something.
