Good, free hard drive test utilities for Win 7?

Hey all,

Just installed a WD Red 3 TB drive and would like to test it thoroughly before I start using it. There's the error scan built into Windows, but that's pretty basic. HD Tune is out there, but it costs $ and I probably won't need it after this. Any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Their tool is Data Lifeguard, and it's not shown as a download option for the Red drives, so I suspect a compatibility issue of some kind.

Thanks.

Hmm, the Quick Test keeps hanging at 90%. No errors, but it estimates two minutes and isn't done after ten.

Trying the Extended Test, but that looks to take 20 hours... lol.

3TB is 3,000,000 MB. Your drive will start off at faster than 100MB/s+ then drop off to about 50MB at the end of the drive. So let's average that at 75MB. So 3,000,000 / 75 = 11+ hours. Again, that is a rough estimate, but at least have an idea of when it'll end. Between 11 to 20 hours.

Best of luck.

I ended up cloning the old drive to the new and then rebooting a couple of times and the quick test is working now.

Going to run the HD Tune sector test over the next day or two.

Thanks.
