The country is very quickly becoming a better place to be in and moving fast away from the civil strife crap of a decade ago. Plus the women are so hot you'll honestly not believe it until you see it, but holy crap. Seriously.

Croatia is nice I've been there. I can't vote for it though. My vote is kinda obvious from my profile if you want someone nice and cheap visit the Czech Republic. Do it this year as next year the EURO is coming and the economy will be in chaos and they'll be a massive wave of inflation.

Australia, China, Fiji are amongst the next countries I'd like to visit personally but all besides China are going to be alot more expensive than the Czech Republic (or any eastern european country for that matter).

Good luck!

I wouldn't mind getting a job near a good surfing beach in Australia, or South Africa and just bumming it for a season.
That would rule

I'd say >50% of your brain is taxed.

It's not easy to get a work permit in Switzerland and most other European nations. I fear it's too time-consuming and takes a too big effort for just one year. However if you're aged 18-35, and have a finished apprenticeship, you could apply for an internship program as a "stagiaire". The internships take 12 (or 18) months and and must be taken in the same profession than you learned. It usually is required that you know the language of the host nation (that would be German and French in Switzerland, depending on the employer Italian would be ok too)... but many other nations have stagiaire programs with Switzerland so I think US citizens also have many possibilities to work in English or Spanish speaking countries.

Students have it easier. If you want to study in a foreign university you're usually allowed to work part-time but below the line you'll spend more money than you earn, in all probability.

However if you have had it but haven't cross the line where a shorter change of scene could change your mood, a big vacation could work wonders, too... There's a handfull of experienced travellers here in the forums, they will answer questions of this kind.

What the hell is wrong with you people? The OP is from the US, and Puerto Rico is a PART OF THIS GODDAMN COUNTRY. It is *not* a foreign country. Different than the States for sure, but not a fvcking foreign country. My God...

I've considered doing what the OP wants to do several times. I settled for short trips instead. Honestly, if I were you I'd take a month or two to cross Europe and just travel. Eat, drink, whore/screw, and immerse yourself in a different culture.

If you stay at hostels -- and use a rail pass or a cheapo Airline like Ryan Air -- you can have a lot of fun for cheap. Don't count out using public campgrounds or getting together with a group once you start traveling.

You need to go to: http://www.travbuddy.com/ and http://wikitravel.org/en/Main_Page

Just go there and read. And read. And read.

I like German and Spanish speaking countries myself. Asia is next on my list. :)

What? Umm... no. Dubai currently has MASSIVE projects going on for Single Family homes, Planned Island Communities, Massive Residential Towers, etc. They also have a plethora of hotels and the like. Ex-pat community is pretty large there as well.

Palm Island? The World? Ever heard of it? Massive planned developments with lots of residential areas.

What about Dubailand? A planned theme/entertainment area that will be over 2 billion square feet. Twice the size of Disney World.

Please note that cost of living in dubai is not very low due to constant increase in rents ( for no apparent reason imo.. ) ... Btw, my house is shown in the pic from the blogspot link.. :)

The only thing about going is pretty all my friends are either bums or poor and I don't think I could find anyone with the money or interest to go so I don't know how exciting going alone would be. But we'll see, it could definetly be worse than that :D
