In honor of Borderlands TPS coming out tommorow I have decided to start playing Borderlands 2. I'm having some OCD about picking a class though. 6 is a lot of choices. In Borderlands 1 i played as Roland. I was thinking of going Axton in BL2 but that might get redundant. Then I was thinking go Gaige because she looks just badass, but then other subsequent classes might feel boring in comparison. Now I'm thinking going with Zero for sniper and melee builds.

So whats a good first class?

Easiest class to play with the best powers is probably Salvador. My friend loves Krieg, but I think it is a hard class to play, but I am not very good at melee. All the classes are pretty good though. I think you should be able to finish normal and true vault hunter modes with just about any class, but Salvador is best for solo play UVHM because you have to slag everything, and you can dual wield with one of the weapons a slag one.

Axton and Gaige both have helpers for when things get tough, so either is a decent choice. Gaige has some really funky mechanics if you choose to use them however, so leveling her up takes a bit more thought. Still, of all my playthroughs I think I enjoyed Gaige the most. Getting insanely high stacks of anarchy means you are an absolute death machine. A death machine with really bad aim, but man it was a fun ride. And, you still have your helper around to take some of the heat off, which can be important when playing solo.

FWIW, I've played through the game with Zero and most recently Krieg. Krieg is tougher to play because you just have to get used to dying a bit, and being a little reckless. But I don't think anyone matches his damage output when in rampage mode. Most monsters that take a minute of gunfire to bring down go down to 2-4 swipes with Krieg's buzz axe.

Personally I thought Zero was well-rounded. I used a sniper build going through Normal and TVHM but kept getting stomped in UVHM. Switched to melee and I didn't have near as many problems dying plus Zero was just funner to use.

Axton and Gaige are both easier to master than the others since they just add a companion instead of you needing to use skills in the right way at the right time.

Gaige was designed to be easier to play than the others, as (dev words not mine) a "girlfriend class" for your less gamer SO.

For someone who has never played any Borderlands games, I'll say to start with Axton, since he seems to be closer to the typical shooter genre.

Since you already played Borderlands (1), unless you think that you will play will all classes (or at least with most classes), the logical choice would be to start with the class that seems most interesting to you.
