I bought a DVD drive about 2 years ago from a local computer store. It was some cheap generic no-named brand drive. I thought it would be enough to get the job done, but the first time i used it, i was amazed as to how QUIET it was, especially compared to my friends Pioneer drive which sounds like a jet engine taking off. The discs also came out nice and cool, even after watching a 2 hour movie, compared to comming out burning hot like on my friends PC's.

I wish i could be of more help, since i have no idea who makes the drive.

There is a utility available for Pioneer DVD-ROMs that allows you to reduce the speed (and noise) for movie playback. It works great on my DVD-116.

I just ordered a Lite-On DVD ROM drive from Newegg, I should get it this week, I'll let you know how it is.

my toshiba SD-M1612 is a pretty fast, quiet, reliable 16x/40x dvd-rom. Toshiba seems to have a good rep. when it comes to dvd-rom drives. They used to be (and still might be) the OEM supplier for dvd-rom drives for dell, probably because they were quiet and reliable.

Anyways, the last offering I have read about from toshiba is the M1712 16x/40x drive. It is supposed to be pretty good too, and it reads discs with safedisc protection if you are into that sort of thing. One thing though, the M1612 is a slouch at dvd-ripping, so if you plan on ripping dvds don't buy it (same with my pioneer 10x/40x). Lite-on dvds drives are very fast at ripping dvds and relatively loud in general.

You can also use CloneCD 4, to create a virtual drive to play CDs and DVDs. This does not produce any noise and it is compatible with most software CDs and DVD movies. When you use a nocd patch, you can use it with all software titles.

I use CloneCD myself and it works. It also saves the trouble of finding the CD from the game I want to play, as they are stored on my harddisk.

Wow, I'll have to look into that! I either have the DVD-116 or 117. Love that Pioneer drive!
