Is there a processor speed that is Good enough for most current games? When I say say good enough imean apoint where a faster cpu gives diminishing returns and you not really going to rack up alot more points. I ask this question because where I live it's Hot and my athlonXP 1800+ puts out somuch heat I can't concintrate on the game, even though it's right under the A/C vent. If I got something like a Abit st6 MB and a Tualatin 1.2 would that be good enough that I still do as well as my ablilty would allow?

i would say try a low speed p4 1.6a. it runs cooler. You can just drop the voltage has well. thought a tualatin is a lot cooler.

It depends on you and what you consider barable. It should be ok for most of todays games. has long has you get nice frame rates. where do u live?

Lemme get this straight...you can't concentrate on your games knowing that your athlon is hot? I don't get it...you make it sound like flames are spewing out from your case vents and you're afraid your place will burn down.

Tualatin 1.2 should be fine for today's games, but in 6 months I'd say it would be lagging pretty bad...

No, I can't concintratrate because of the heat the cpu is putting out makes it unbearably hot sitting near my computer, I live in So. California. I was also thinking that since the i815-ep chipset is so "mature" might be more stable and compatiple?

i dont think it would be youre athlon giving off enough heat to bother you. most likely its your psu, as those give off a lot of heat (thats why you feel hot air coming out of the top fan on your case - its the psu fan)

lol, when I first saw, "good enough for most current games" I was going to mention the Athlon XP 1800+ coincidentally... Your heat issues are not coming from your processor man... You need to either

a) Get a new PSU, I recommend Sparkle, they run very low heat from my experiences from them...
b) Get a better heatsink and fan...
c) Get the fire extinguisher and put that fire out bud, cuz nothing should be putting off that kind of heat

Anywho... I know what I'm talking about, it was 102 in the shade today here lol, AZ has it's warm days ;) My Athlon tbird never exceeds 41C and you're running an XP.... so you must be doing something wrong bud...

ok, m psu is a ENERMAX EG365P-VE(FCA) 350W and my videocard is Leadtech GeForce 3 ti200. HSF seem to be ok since it's takeing the heat off the CPU and putting it in the room.:);):(:disgust:

I severely doubt that the heat is coming off of your CPU... But it is odd that your processor would be heating your entire room... are you sure it's not your monitor?

I live in nebraska and it's been around 95-100 degrees every day, i just looked at san diego and la's weather and it's hitting mid 80's. CRY ME A RIVER. I think my comps may heat my room a little but even with two one, it never gets so hot that it's unbearable.

lol, yeah, cry me a river too, it's been 105 in the shade in here every day for the last 2 weeks. Tucson, AZ

The processor's not heating your room, but when you replace it with something cooler I'll bet ya it's not going to change anything :disgust:

let me state once again: although a p4 will probably run cooler than an athlon xp, it will not fix the heat problems youre having. actually, now that i think about it, the prime source of heat from computers is monitors, followed by psu's. (im pretty sure, i dont know exact order, but i know both of those give off more than the cpu). i think if you got an lcd screen, it would be a lot cooler.

edit: added word in bold (kinda changes the whole meaning, don't it)

1.2 Tually is a pretty decent setup and puts out less heat than pretty much anything out there. It's not as fast as the 1800+, but I'm sure you know that already. If you dont overclock it, you can even undervolt it down to ~ 1.1 - 1.2 Vcore. The ST6 is a good board, BTW. You could overclock it up to 1.6 Ghz or so once temps cool down. On that note, ever think of underclocking/undervolting the setup you have for the Summer months?
