Good DVD-ROM brands?

I've heard that the lite-on LTD-163 is fastest, but loud. The Pioneer 106s has slot loading, and seems nearly as fast.

Can anyone recommend a brand of DVD-ROM to get? Thanks.

Either look at Liteon, Pioneer or Toshiba. All are pretty good. The Toshiba is probably the quietest. The slot loads are going to be fairly loud too.

I have a Liteon and a Toshiba and I like both but I don't even notice the noise at all really.

None other than Toshiba- best one on the market by a longshot, IMHO. They make great source drives when paired with a Plextor too!

Sounds like you are looking for something new, but if you look at used DVD-roms and want something that works quietly, consider a Samsung. I know people on this forum will think I'm nuts suggesting a Samsung, but I bought one used because it was inexpensive and, most importantly to me, it was region-free! It is without a doubt the quietest DVD-rom (or CD or HD or any kind of drive for that matter) that I've ever owned. Even if I put my ear right up to it, I can barely hear the thing work - truly whisper quiet.

As for something new, all the suggestions in the previous posts are good ones. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Just my 2 cents.

rocketbubba you're not nuts for recommending Samsung. I've found Samsung CD-ROM's to be very reliable.

As for the original question, I would go with Pioneer. I've had a lot of problems with Lite-On DVD-ROM's. I have a Pioneer 16x and it is without a doubt the best DVD-ROM I've ever used. The thing I love is the fact you can set it to run slower in the FIRMWARE!!! You can set the speed of some other drives but this is the first one that I've seen let you change it in the firmware. I set it to "permanent slow" so it is perfectly quite. You will have to pull it from my cold dead hands! I've even considered getting a IEEE1394 enclosure and connecting it to my laptop. :D
