've been using the trial version of Nero for burning files onto DVD (storage) and found it to be quite good but $80 for a bunch of stuff I do not need is a waste.

Are there less expensive or free alternatives? I'm just interested in burning files onto DVD-R discs but with some extra versatility and reliability (should read properly on all DVD drives)

Not for free ... try PowerISO for $29.95 ... http://www.poweriso.com/
As to Nero if you buy it Retail & on Sale (check Walmarts) you can
get it for $60 which includes Lifetime Updates .... and right now you
may think you do not need all the features, but you will find yourself
using Some of them at some point ... And Nero is Very Reilable Software
Hardly any bugs in it
