good dvd backup software for a mac?

What exactly do you mean by backup?

HandBrake will let you make rips that can playback on your computer.
Toast/Disk Utility/Disco will let you make ISOs that you can then re-burn to DVDs.
Just pulling the Video_TS folder off the disk also works.
 
MacTheRipper for direct TS copies.
Handbrake for MP4/MKV
(But MP4 is by far the better option)

I had my library backed up as TS until I filled my 4TB NAS.
Now I am moving to MP4 and it is great.

In Handbrake I would suggest the high profile setting with RF at 18.
