Can anyone recommend to me a download manager that's easy to use, compatible with XP, and has no adware/spyware?

A download manager? Yer kidding, right? I've never used one. I create a folder and all downloads go there. Just in case you have not figured it out, the folder is named "downloads". ;)

Well there are usefull functions like resume if you get kicked off the server you are downloading a large file from. My browser has one built into it.

compuwiz1, DL managers that use more than one DL source and/or it's mirrors do save time, plus, they have extra features like resume/suspend which Win XP by itself cannot do.
