Video: Modern Dome Homes

Monolithic Website

Just researching alternative homes for fun. My neighbor has one and it's pretty cool. I didn't realize how much dome homes have advanced. HVAC costs are 50% of a normal stick house. I especially like this quote:

Monolithic Domes meet FEMA standards for providing near-absolute protection and have a proven ability to survive tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, most manmade disasters, fire, termites and rot.
The building concept is pretty straightforward: lay the foundation, inflate the airform and spray with polyurethane foam, install steel rebar, and then spray with Shotcrete. Here's an illustration:

I love this one:

They recommend steel studs in place of wood to promote fire resistance. They even have tools for that. Photos here:

The three biggest complaints I've heard are: (1) weird acoustics, (2) weird for interior design (putting up shelves, etc.), and (3) future resale when moving. So maybe not for a main house, but for a guest house or vacation cabin it'd be pretty neat 🙂

Of course, it's hit or miss with the WAF 😉

For the interior decorating, the domed shape should make it ideal for replicating the interior of Enterprise-D. 😀

I like monolithic domes, but my wife thinks of them as caves. Caves are bad to her - I think I could live in a cave.

As long as you have someone bring the fire it's all good.

at first from the title I thought u meant a Video of someone giving some good Dome at home 😉 😉

Ugh, if those twerps in that vid say "Monolithic Dome" one more I might puke. Is this some bullshit "we'll steal the entire idea but call it something else so we don't have to pay royalties" thing?

Buckminster Fuller must be turning over in his grave.

Those are geodesic domes, bitch! 😛

First, Monolithic is the company.

Second, they are called monolithic because they use an inflatable initial setup structure, not an angular geodesic design - they're a 1-piece setup initially, sprayed with foam, then have re-bar installed followed by sprayed concrete. So it's a little bit different than the angular wood dome home setups 😉

Edit: short article about the differences
