Came across this and thought it would be good for linux servers, web/email PCs, Network Appliance, LTSP, and the like.

Wow the laptops seem very cheap. One could always buy a very cheap laptop and upgrade a few parts like buy a wireless pcmcia card and maybe a dvd burner. This seems extremely interesting. 🙂

I am shopping cheap laptops, looking at a lot of C400 and C610 from Dell, plus considering the cheap new units like the B130 or B120.

C400 Pentium III M 866MHz CPU with 256 MB RAM, 12.1" Active Matrix Screen, 20.0 GB, $223 shipped, but thats with no OS and no power adapter, battery likely not much either.

Thats a 'if all goes well' good price, but any troubles and its not too good at all. With new stuff more than twice as fast, more ram, more hard drive, CDRW/DVD, a new battery, XP home, and a 1 yr warranty, shipped for less than $500 none of the used stuff unless its in actually very nice shape and a bit better on price is worth even considering.

Desktops sound good. I agree with mikeford on the laptops. Not worth it unless you're not a deal hunter (then you wouldn't be here!). Too much can go wrong and while it is definately possible to replace items like LCD cables, keyboards, etc by your self it just doesn't make sense when you can get a deal on a laptop for $450-$500 that is new, much faster, has more HD space, and has a warranty. Thanks to the OP though as I am looking for cheap lower end desktops.

I would agree with you guys regarding the laptops. Also the "condition" doesn't seem as good regarding the PCs/Servers/Hardware.

Thanks for the post guys

Q's from a server newbie
When the item says
---- processor: P3 Xeon
---- cpu qty: 4
---- cpu speed: 700Mhz

Does this mean all 4 cpu's are running a total of 700mhz (175mhz each) or
all 4 cpus is running at 700mhz each?
I have assembled a lot of PC's but thier all single cpu desktop PC for regular use, now I want to play around with a server PC and install a trial version of server2003 OS for MCSE stuff.

4 CPUs with each being 700mhz or your 2nd choice. or 2800mhz total like your first choice :0)

Not bad stuff, comparable or maybe better than eBay prices... I only wish they had unit sizes on the servers 🙁 I'm in the market for a cheap 1U server, P3 or so is fine.
