Ok I am living in Japan and will be here for another month or so. There is this bike for sale that is better then the average shopping bike here that costs around 8,000 yen(80 bucks).

This guy has a 12 year old Schwinn Traveler with a new front tire, a carrying case for the bike, extra pedals with toe clips, and shoes that clip into the current pedals. He wants all of that for 10,000 yen. or roughly 90 bucks with the exchange rate. Would this be a good bike to bring back to the states and ride as well?

Any help is appreciated. thanks!

Nominate for weirdest question of the month!

Why would you need a carrying case for a bike??

I'd pay $90 in the states for a bike like that if a. it fits and b. it's in good condition. However shipping from Japan to the states will cost a small fortune, so unless you really need a bike for 1 month, I'd pass.

carrying case sounds like it's something you can attach (like a basket) and carry stuff around on the bike.

it's hard to tell just from that picture if the bike would be with $90 states-side... wouldn't it cost a lot to ship it or ferry it to the US? you can most likely find a decent bike for about the same money over here, it seems.

Schwinns are good bikes. Would be a good $90 investment as long as shipping it back to the states isn't too expensive. Where you at in the Land of the Rising Sun??

really...Are you sure?

Airlines are charging for additional baggage now, especially if its an obscure shape...not to mention the baggage handlers won't care about your bike :)

looks as though if you are going just within the US they will charge you for the bike. If you fly international there is no charge aslong as its not over the weight limit..which it wont be.

any more thoughts on the BIKE?

Bikes are charged as oversized items, so you're looking at probably $80 for flying it back. I can get away with no fee for our folding bikes because I can break them down small enough to fit in a standard sized suitcase (Samsoninte Oyster FTW!). I don't see that buying a bike in Japan for a month and flying back with it makes all that much sense when talking about an $80-$100 bike.

Edit: OTOH if it sells here for more than your cost plus airline fee...
