Actually they wouldn't move at all on the $14995 price. Even after I said 'cash up front.' He wouldn't move an inch.

Try an '01 ES 300. That might be more than what you were going to spend on the TL, but it's a good car. If you have to go older than '01, you probably should look for a non-luxury car.

Or you could get an RSX/Integra or a CL (when did they stop making that? Not sure)

Good point man, good point!
Damn!! I should pay one of you guys to be my wingman when I go out and look around!!!

What about a 1999 TL? Do I sacrifice to many ammenites comapred to the '01? Any 'Gotchas' to look out for. Does it have same/close HorsePower?

the thing is that it is a lux /sports car and if you go back too far it kind of ruins the experience.

For me '01 is pushing it and '02 or '03 is ideal.

Drive the cars and see what you like best

Well, finding a '03tl around here for even 'around' $16k just might not work. And I have to get at a major dealer, thats how the financing is set. No private sales, or 'mom & pop' places.

But, if anyone can answer this.... Are there any similar cars of the 03tl in amenities and power & handling, not 'flashy' and for around $16k?? I'll be doing more test driving this afternoon, so give me something else too look at-PLEASE!!!

Just curious: How old are you - and how far have you gotten in life? I'm not being sarcasting or sasstastic, I'd just like to know.

I'm 28 man. Look, I don't want to turn this thread into a pissing contest. I'd just like to know what my options are. I make 60k a year. But I just don't want a 'new new' car.

I wasn't either.

But really, I'd hit all the classifieds, hit all the online sources and look for something you like.

Last time I was at the auction, I grabbed an extra new car book. If you wanna buy it off me, it would be like $10 and give you national sale results for almost every car in your year range.

ah, the ES. i still grin when i see a clean white one with the clear taillights.

a year ago, i was pretty much in the same boat as the OP but with a lower budget (10k)

TL-tranny issues; no manual; over budget

CL-same tranny issues; drove the 5-speed (I4) but handling wasn't the greatest; 4 cylinders is barely cutting it for a car this size.

ES300-solid solid car. but at 23, i looked like i was driving my mom's car. plus, i really didn't want to sacrifice the manual.

RSX-had doubts about a compact 2-door and after i drove it, couldn't stand the decreased rear visibility.

TSX-way over budget since the oldest new one was a 2004; plus, didn't want a first year model. if i had the dough, i'd get one now.

integra-wasn't love at first sight, but i ended up buying it and everytime i get out of the car now, i think to myself "this car is perfect." (got a 1998 GS-R sedan, a rarity among integras. it even came with a factory cassette player for my mp3-tape adapter!) spent $8k after replacing tbelt/water pump and scheduled maintenance.

for the OP, an '03 TL seems like a good fit, but i would check mycarstats.com for recall/owner reports info as i can't remember if the tranny issue was fixed that year.

Well, now after all the above of me serisouly sweating the '01TL, I think I can get 90% of the TL in a 2000-02 Honda Accord EX V6. Looking for certified, if possible or a 1-2 year included full warranty.

Is it possible to do this for $10-13k?

Let me know!

4-cylinder hondas/acuras do not have the tranny problems that are associated with the V6's from that period. that CL's tranny would have been fine, PLUS it was the manual, and there haven't been any problems from honda manuals, regardless of the engine.

check out MSN autos. they have a reliability history rating of each model year, and it shows that the 2002 accords should not have the tranny issue.

IIRC, ALL hondas/acuras sharing that platform during those years used the same automatic transmission: TL/CL/accord/odyssey...am i missing anything? just one example, my roommate's 2001 accord EX-4cyl had to have the tranny replaced.

one more thing i reminded myself is that although honda backs the trannys for 7yr/100k, i don't think they provide rental cars and they certainly don't reminburse you for the time spent driving back and forther to the dealer. don't get me wrong; i love honda, but the tranny issue is more than i'd want in a reliable car. go manual

Those use the same family/design powertrain/tranny so they also have issues.

I will say though imo this whole tranny problem thing is a little overblown, I know lots of people who own these cars and I haven't seen this problem firsthand. Honda says the problem rate is actually a single digit percent.

03+ V6s seem to be minorly afflicted to tranny issues. 03+ I4s are immune, the tranny so far seems bulletproof.

Well today I went on the test drive of a 01 Accord EX loaded, for $14,500 with 42k miles. Nice car. Just didn't 'do it for me' like the TL. Though, I'm sure that price is very fair.

But the more I think about it, the more I'm going to try out the 03TL I may be able to get one around here from close to $16k or so with maybe around 60K miles or less (one can only hope).

As for a 01 or 02 TL, I may still consider it. The 01 TL I tried yesterday had 49k miles and a certified 1 year bumper to bumper warranty. I'll look at a 01/02 TL if it comes with something better than a 90 warranty.

How much would 1 year of bumper to bumper cost privatley to get for a 01TL with 49k miles. Anyone?

too much $$$ for the OP

If you don't HAVE to buy a car, I'd keep with what you're driving until it dies. House first, then car.
