Good deal on Loaded Dell Dual Core Laptop

My first post here after spending a LOT of money because of you guys 🙂

Dells new Inspiron E1705 Intel Core Duo are out and as of yesterday Dells famous coupons will work on them.
There is a $350 off 1399, $500 off $1599, OR $650 off 1999 so you can add options till your heart is content!

You can get a 'base' one for $1099.

I ordered the T2400 1.83 Ghz Dual core with 1 gig of RAM, 80GB hd, GeForce Go 7800, and DVD burner for $1368. Start with the model that has the free DVD upgrade, unless you need the software, better value IMO.

According to the guys over at notebookreview.com this thing should chew through most apps right now. Hope you Enjoy!

Not bad. I've been contemplating going for one of these to replace my home PC all week. But I'd have added the upgraded WUXGA screen and got the additional 9-cell battery, used the $650 off $1999, gone through FatCash -$40, used an E&A coupon -$35, and sold the stock 6-cell battery for $70.

Even better if you file your taxes at turbotax.com and get $800 worth of Amex gift cards for $720 and apply them to the purchase -$80.

Still, the problem remains, for me at least, that I want a 3 year warranty (which aren't discuonted much right now), so when I sell it in two years I can offer it with another 1 year left, and they had $750 off $1999 coupons last week. The extra $100 and the warranty adding at least that much to the resale mean the difference between taking a huge hit or small dent at resale time.

Plus, I'm having trouble with the idea of needing to give up my PC, which I'd need to do to pay for this. Something about not being able to tinker much with my computer fills me with a feeling of sadness....plus I'm using a raptor and would miss it terribly. 🙂

usually i will only buy any labtop or pc with only one year warranty. Dell will usually send you a letter offering you to buy their extended warranty for a discount price. For example, i already had one year warranty on my e105 i think, cheap desktop, they said i can have 3 additional years for $100 after a $50 rebate.

a little off topic, but how good are core duo laptops running vmware so i can run servers?
i been looking at the XPS200/5150c Pentium-D for their small form factor, but if notebooks can have dual core now, maybe i will go this route to run a few test servers...

On VMware.

The only catch is how much RAM do you need. Dell states that these support only 2 Gigs. I have read that you might be able to put 4 Gigs in it but I have not seen anyone say they have done it.

Came to just under $1400 shupped next day (I live in Alaska, it's my only option).

I'm stoked! I sold my other lappy for $700. I think this is certainly a worthy $700 upgrade.

Dont leave USB 2 devices plugged into intel duo lappies while on battery. Theres a problem with that that will probably be fixed in BIOS, but at the moment, it basically runs everything at max (no power saving) when you have a USB 2 device plugged in. You can google for details, its been in the news recently.

you should upgrade to the 100gb HDD instead of going with the +$125 for 1gb RAM option. you can buy a 1gb stick of the same RAM for $105 from the Dell store and sell the 2x256 that comes inside the laptop. if you choose the RAM option you only get 2x512.

besides, i'd much rather have the extra HDD space or the WUXGA screen than 1gb of overpriced RAM 🙂

Not a BIOS issue; this is an issue with MS's SP2 ACPI driver.

So, what you're saying is, this doesn't need two sticks of RAM to run in Dual-Channel mode?

EDIT- I don't need a larger hard-drive; I have a desktop for that. However, a WUXGA screen is certainly intriguing.

hmmm, I am not really worried about the harddrive space, I have 200GB on the desktop and I was thinking about upgrading to a bigger 7200 RPM drive later anyways.

But you're right, the WUXGA is something to think about....Will I really notice the diffrence?

Nutdotnet: Dual channel requires 2 sticks. I think he was thinking purely price, not performance.

lostguy28: When you are configuring the lappie at dell you can click on a link to explain about the monitor choice. You can then click a tab on that popup that says TECHNICAL DETAILS or specs or some such. It will tell you the resolutions availible and what the WUXGA+ means in terms of rez.
The highest is 1920x1200 and thats on their 17" screens. It varies from there, some screens from dell are as low as 1024x. Its up to you, everyone prefers differant things. You should choose a size you want to run at most of the time, LCD monitors run best at thier native resolution (the highest). So if you are someone who runs a 19" CRT monitor at 1024x768 because you dont like tiny fonts, dont get a 1920x1200 screen. It will look like crap running in a resolution like 1024x. If you want to game a lot, but are going to get a cheap integrated graphics card, you probably wont want the highest resolution, because the integrated wont handle it.
But if you like running very high resolution, or are spending the extra to get a kick butt graphics option, then you probably will want the highest res availible.

Yes I know. But MS has known about it for more than half a year now and haven't bothered to fix it.
Supposedly the problem may be able to be worked around in a bios update with intel helping. Which is why I said probably be fixed in bios, I didn't say it was a bios problem 🙂

LOL, it did open again! I'm glad you posted. I looked again, and the deal is back!

I'm so stoked right now. Dropped about $1,500 on this beauty.

Quick question- Is the 667mhz ram worth $140 more than the standard 533mhz?

How much more performance can I expect for media encoding using the faster Ram?

TIA
