Good deal? Mac PowerPC 6500 250MHz - $120

I'm a PC guy, but I've been wanting an older, cheap Mac just to fool around with. Nothing too old, something that could still be useful for something. Anyway, a friend of mine who is a Mac whore (she is a vegetarian, theatre major, liberal political activist, enviromentalist, photographer, and smokes pot...so I guess that explains the Mac fanaticism) is offering to sell her PowerPC 6500 250MHz, w/ 48mb RAM, cdrom, zip drive, ethernet (didn't mention HDD size) and a 15 inch monitor and Epson printer for $150. I jewed her down to $120 and she's down with it. Am I ripping her off or vice versa? 🙂

I know almost nothing about Macs, so I figure this is perfect to learn on.

EDIT: And its got OS 8.6

What are my chances of being able to put OS 10 on it? Even worth it?

That is not a good deal. That thing is incredibly dated. This person's name isn't Emma is it 😉 That thing will never run OSX and 8.6 is so outdated. It doesn't even have protected memory ala win 3.11. Stay away from it. No USB ports either which is all mac uses now (and firewire) you'll never get any accessories for it.

Can I not add in a USB card? No PCI slots or what?

Damn, I was hoping it actually might be useful. I just figured OS 8.6 can't be THAT old...only 1.4 away from OSX 😀...well 1.6 now...The printer is pretty nice though and the monitor is in good shape...but could I use the monitor on a PC?

Anyone else have an opinion?

I wouldn't touch a piece of crap like that. As for PCI slots, you have to be careful because some of those old Performas had no expansion at all.

Macintoshes of that era and actually today too use a proprietay montior connector. Today, they also have a standard VGA port but at the time they didn't. You won't be able to use that monitor on a PC without an adapter.

I don't know, it's at 250MHz so it would run just about everything short of OSX pretty well. Also if you wanted to get a G3/G4 card (about $100) you could upgrade so that you'd be able to run OSX. I use an 8500/120MHz for various things.... OS 9 works well on it. (I got it for free BTW, but I've spent money to upgrade the HD and RAM.) But I've got 128MB of RAM, and that seems to help a lot. I would consider this deal, if she was offering software on the hard drive. I've seen lots of ads for old Macs like this, and in almost every case they've got some old version of Photoshop/Illustrator/Quark/QuicktimePro/etc. on there, which would be useful esp. if you don't have these programs on your PC. If it had the software and she was selling it for $100, I'd probably go for it.

I personally found it rather funny, but then Im not a very sensitive person, so I guess Im not a good point of reference for what's ok and not.

But then I see people talking about drunken Irish, cheap Scotts, and Tea drinking English all the time, not to mention the Swedish blondes who are all named "Inga" or "Greta" 😉

Oh and I'd stay away from that Mac at that price, if you could get it for $50 or below I guess it would make a decent router or something, running OpenBSD or Linux that is 🙂

Not usually with the monitor and printer and you cant always tell the condition. 😉

Im not a vegetarian (in fact I find it idiotic to eat vegetables if you wont eat other life forms like animals, carrots have feelings too!), Im not a theatre major (although the theatre can make a wonderful evening on occassion), Im definitely not a liberal (anyone who limits their political beliefs by using such words needs help), I am not an environmentalist, I do take pictures but wouldnt consider myself a photographer, and I do not smoke pot. But I am an avid Mac user.

yeah...where do you draw the line? i've always thought that myself. its ok to disinfect things (you're killing bacteria!! knock it off!!), its ok to kill bugs, its ok to kill rats, but its not ok to kill a cat? wtf?? silly humans.

hey, adjectives are convenient. no need to write a 20 page document whenever someone asks what your political views are 😛

But I am an avid Mac user.
and an atypical one at that 😉

anyways...my friend has a (8500? 9500? not sure), it was upgraded to a g3 466, has i think 512MB ram, a 10k scsi drive, and it runs osx ok, in fact a bit better than his imac g3 400 mostly due to the scsi drive. i would think you could run os9 just fine on that machine (although i'd upgrade the ram), and probably osx although it wont exactly be fast. check out macaddict.com and other (cant think of names of others, i'm not really deeply into macs due to $$$$ reason) mac sites, and their forums, faqs, etc, theres all kinds of info about what osx will and will not run on, and how well it does run on certain hardware.

btw while i'm not offended by the phrase 'jew' (as a verb), it is pretty offensive and i would never use it myself, not so much due to the fact that i'm worried about offending people, but because generally i consider racist/homophobic comments used casually as being an indicator of lower forms of intelligence - not that i'm calling you unintelligent, it just kinda makes you seem that way when you talk about great person-rigging something or jewing someone out of something or "THATS GHEY".

oh, and how could you forget Olga!?!? 😛

I find out which topics they are interrested in and explain my views on those particular topics.

Im pretty atypical all together.

The bottom of the line is a g3, a 603e is not up to snuff.

I always try and forget about Olga!

hehe

Don't know, Olga sounds kinda Russian to me...

As for using "jew" as a verb, I don't usually use words like that myself(never heard the term jew used as a verb before in fact), but I can't say I mind either.
IMO people who get all upset and read into stuff like that take life way too seriously, but again, that's just me 🙂

I don't know what country your in of if you're a jew yourself but if you face an anti-semitic attitude day in and day out and then are greeted to an insulting cultural generalization I doubt that you would take it lightly. Any kind of racial/cultural stereotyping is wrong as are any generalizations about people whether it's because of where they live, their income, their skin colour, or their religion. I think that blatant racist remarks are the least harmful since you know that they're wrong. It's little ethnic slurs like this one that are so commonly used which are the most dangerous. As they become a part of people's vernacular, the idea is easily spread and more impressionable minds are exposed to this kind of B.S. People become desensitized to it.
A member of the KKK might say that black people are dumb, lazy, and inferior.
Someone on a forum might use a phrase which implies that jews are greedy cheapskates.
There really is no shade of grey here. It's either a racist comment or it's not. Right or wrong. If racist comments like this are accepted in a social situation like this (where someone is helping you FFS) then the attitude will be with you everywhere in your life. It also let's people know that are reading this post that you think that way about jews. If you didn't, you would have used the word haggled. It's also letting the person who's helping you know that you think the same thing of them.
And people wonder why there's such a lack of respect in our children. People wonder how racist attitudes survive generations...

Sounded more frugal than cheap to me.

Yes, I'm sure the phrase "jewed him down a few bucks" was meant to imply that Jews are just good hagglers....right....I edited my post above.

Didn't really seem racist to me, but that's a question of interpretation I guess.
But Im fairly hard to insult, cept of course if someone decides to start attacking me personally, calling me this and that.

Oh well, oppinions are like assholes, no? 🙂
