Good deal for me or did I just get a power hungry monster?

I have a buddy trying to get rid of a few sapphire 290x video cards..

I snagged one for $260 to replace my aging 670 GTX, he was in a bind.

Aside from the power rating, it seems to be an impressive card, escpecially considering after the recent "price drop" from AMD/ATI to keep up with Nvidia's 9-series release.

Thoughts?
 
For that price, it's a good deal (in my humble opinion) and you can sell your 670 to recoup even more money.

Edit: Saw the card and wow, really good deal. Lol.

Its a good deal, providing it doesn't have the reference cooler.

For comparison, aftermarket 290s can go as low as $252AR new. But if you are happy with your purchase, that's all that matters.
 
Sounds like a good deal to me. I have a 3770k with 2 GTX670FTS in SLI and the rig below with 290s is faster plus has 4G vs 2G VRAM
 
I have some friends on the web that report me that 290x doesn't consume much more than GK110 cards. One of my friends report a 263W peak gaming power consumption for a custom overclocked 1060Mhz 290x.

Based on what i saw, i conclude that 290x/290 are not the power hungry cards everyone fears. Not power hungry if well cooled and with better temperatures, of course.
 
I have the Sapphire Tri-X OC r9 290s and really like them. Since you got the R9 290X for $260, I'd say you got one heck of a deal!
 
I recently purchased the ASUS R290 Direct CUII aftermarket cooled R290 for $250 (before the big price drops) and I have been extremely happy. I think you got a great deal, and that card will pull some power, but also chew through any game! ENJOY IT!
 
I think the 670 to a 290x is a decent step up.

The power consumption is subjective to the individual. If it causes you no issues (such as heat, noise, etc) then what is the worry here? I absolutely would not go out and buy a 970 if i had a 290x.

Of course power consumption might be something a person would consider if you were trying to chose between two cards you wanted to buy. Some people will claim it doesnt matter and should be ignored but realistically it is something to take into consideration and has been since GF100 vs the HD 5800 series (Thats why i went with the hd5850 back then). But that was me choosing between two cards i was gonna buy new. And i think that when your choosing between cards like that, the little differences matter.

But----

This 290x fell into your lap at a pretty good price. Its one of the best 290x models ever. I dont blame you for picking it up. It is a very nice toy.

My advice to you is enjoy it.

There is nothing to worry about. Enjoy it until the next wave of cards come out. That is my advice
