I was just wondering whether or not people thought the new computer that I'm getting is good value for money.Take into account the fact that I live in Australia so things are probably more expensive here than in America.

Athlon XP 2100+
ASUS A7V333-A motherboard
512mb PC2100 DDR
Pioneer 16x DVD
40gb Maxtor 7200RPM 2M cache ATA133
Creative Soundblaster Live DE 5.1 SE
1.44 Sony Floppy
Leatek Geforce 4 A250 TD Ti 4400 128mb
Mitsubishi 19" Monitor
Mitsubishi 56k Internal modem
Logitech Mouseman Dual Optical
Microsoft Internet Keyboard

For AUD$3000 which i think is about US$1500

That's prebuilt cost right? Comes with the WinXP home/pro OS? If so then that doesn't sound like too bad of a deal for $1500 US, not sure what Aussie conversion for currency.

I didn't even know Mitsubishi made modems.

I don't know how much more expensive things are in Australia compared to the US (ignoring the conversion between USD and AUD), but if that's just the cost of the hardware from whereever you're buying it, before any shipping or build fees, then it seems a tad high. Unless things cost 50% more there, which they may well for all I know.

Using newegg.com as a guide, choosing things as close as possible (don't know what DE and SE stand for with the sound card, or exactly which monitor you meant), I came up with USD$1048, and shipping only brought that up to $1125 including the monitor's shipping.

From the way you list it, I can't tell if it's being built for you or if you're buying the parts yourself, or whether any software or the OS comes with it, but even if an OEM copy of WinXP is included, that's only a bit more, and I certainly wouldn't pay 300 dollars or more just to have someone else assemble a computer for me. Heck, I felt bad adding 30 dollars onto the cost for me to build a computer for someone.

I didnt know they made modems either but I just said chuck in a cheap internal one.
Yeah it is about $US 0.54 to AUD$1 so that explains the big difference.
It is getting built for me and with Windows XP Pro.
I think the monitor is the normal 19" not the flatscreen.

I say that's a pretty good deal as a buddy of mine in New Zealand just spent $3300 NZD for a similar system with a 17" monitor. Looks like you're also getting quality parts so that is a bonus :).

And I just realised that I have so much homework to do that for most of next week the most hardware intensive things I will be running are Winamp and MS Word.

When I referred to the price difference, I didn't mean the conversion rate between AUD and USD. I was referring to whether or not things were more expensive there than in the US, disregarding the conversion rate.

For example, if the conversion is USD$.54 to AUD$1, then a AUD50 item is equivalent to USD27 in Australia, but would that same item only cost USD18 in the US? I'm wondering if items are 50% (or higher) more expensive in Australia after accounting for the conversion rate.

In this case, you're paying 3000 AUD, which is about 1700 USD, yet I can get the same parts for about 1000 USD, so you're paying 70% more in equivalent units.

In other terms, if you convert my price to AUD, I'm only paying 1850 AUD or so for the products, where you're paying 3000 AUD.

I can understand some things being more expensive, for various reasons, but 70% more? That'd mean if I brought USD to the country and converted it, I'd get almost 2 AUD for every 1 USD, but then I'd pay 3 AUD for something that only cost 1 USD in America.

Yeah but in Australia its a pretty good deal coz the guy is gettin it for me at near wholesale price. Which in Australia is still higher than in the US. I dont mind anyway if it is a bit expensive compared to US coz my parents are payin for most of it so they can get the computer I'm using now.

Everything in Australia is behind the US. Take broadband for a very good example, talk to any Aussie and they will tell you how bad it is. AUD$95 per month for ADSL 512/128 with 3gb cap. And the only good deal was cable but now they put a 3gb cap on that too. I would get ADSL but it isnt even available in my area, as with cable so i use a crappy dialup connection. Australia, they call it the lucky country. Not with computers and internet.

Remind me never to move to Australia. Or to vacation there. I hope you people get paid a lot more (after the currency conversion) than here if prices are that much more.
