Good deal: ECS K7S5A + Athlon 1600+/266 for $104.98 @ Newegg

Hi,

I just purchased the ECS K7S5A motherboard from Newegg to replace a problem motherboard. Newegg has this motherboard for $52.99, no shipping charges. Others have posted that the Athlon 1600+/266 is $52.99 at Newegg. There is NO shipping on either item, so the combined price is $104.98. I thinking about buying the cpu, but since both items have zero shipping charges, I held off. I'm currently using a Duron 600. The ECS board can take either SDRAM or DDR memory. So its an inexpensive replacement for a problem Abit KT7 board and no new memory is required.

For $105 you could upgrade both motherboard & cpu. This is a nice way to upgrade a system at a good price.

pretty good deal... i just got my ECS and AXP 1600+ from newegg setup today and here are my results:

it posts just fine at 133 fsb for 1400 MHz (actually 1394 MHz )

posts and loads all the way up to 166 fsb at default voltage for 1750 MHz

This is using Samsung pc2700 ddr-ram, so i would say that it aint too shabby and not a bad combo at all!

I agree that Newegg has a wide reputation around here, & I noted that others had posted the CPU deal.

I spent a fair amount of time looking for an inexpensive replacement boards, and both items had zero shipping costs. Together they are good deal. If it cuts the time for somebody else, then the post was worth it.

the board only supports ata100 - will the hard drive still function and if it does how much will the performance be reduced?

Your harddisk will still function, no problem at all.
About the performance, I don't think it will have much difference either.

Built in S3 Savage 4 Video, LAN, Audio, Ultra DMA33/66/100/133, 4 USB, and supports both memory types as well.

Uses the KM266, which is based on combining VIA KT266A with S3 latest graphics.
Biostar M7VIG VIA KM266 / VT8233A

While the built-in video is not top choice, and doesn't run 3dm2k1se well, it does
run all games at 32bit rather nicely, and falls in the same class as GF2mx for gaming.

I have built several upgrade systems for customers, using both the ECS and Biostar boards,
and for a cheap, reliable and fast system, the Biostar is hands down a better way to go.

What is the difference between the M7VIG and the M7VIQ ?
It looks to me like the M7VIQ has USB2.0 and only DDR.
Also, looking at neweggs listing there does not appear to be a LAN onboard on either board.
At Biostar's website it lists LAN as an option for the M7VIG.
I have built half a dozen systems with the K7S5A, but it would be nice to find a good board with built in VID too.

I disagree with part of that statement. The K7S5A also has built in audio, LAN, and has connectors for 2 extra USB ports, bringing the total to 4.

The difference is built in video and Ultra DMA 133 but that Biostar board has less PCI slots.

I don't want to turn this into a tech thread instead of a hot deals trhread, but I wonder: Do these combos require a mammoth power supply?

To ask more parochially: if I currently have an old overclocked Celeron 850 MSI 6321 mobo, can I dump it and plug these in with no other changes, basically? Or do I need a 400W PS or something?

The ECS K7S5A is fairly picky about power supplies. In general (there are exceptions) it needs a good quality 300W or greater. I had to buy a new Enermax 350W for it because my Enlight 300W was giving me problems. There's been a lot of discussion on the ECS forum at ocworkbench about this board, and they have a helpful FAQ for it.

Looks like the main difference is that the Q supports only DDR ram, while the G supports both.

Might as well trade in the SDRAM for DDR and get a Asus nForce Board for $78 and a 1600+ for $52 at newegg.
I'm sure the nforce will eat the biostar for breakfast on video and sound.
Biostar only uses a KM266 not 266a. I'd say the ECS is a better choice than the biostar.

I also second the comment that the ECS is the better choice. I built 6 systems with the ECS and not one problem. (2) of (3) Biostar boards I used had problems with the built in video.
