Good cycling bike for <$200?

I'm looking to invest in a good bike (non-mountain, already have one of these and it is old and bad for riding on normal terrain) for under $200. I currently have a huffy red baron mountain bike (24" or 26"?) and it stinks for regular 1-3 bike riding in the woods (there is a trial 🙂) What are some suggestions? (I prefer to buy B&M because i want to ride and feel it before i buy it) Thanks.

not gonna happen.

Just use what you have, or get a TOYSRUS bike.

A mediocre Trek or Giant or whatever STARTS @ $400-500

A good ROAD bike is a LOT more. ~$1500

Luckily I had an uncle who gave me his VITUS now that he doesn;t need it. Campagnelo brakes, shifters etc😀..oh, and a bottle holder...😀😉

A good bike for less than $200 is gonna be tough to find. But there's always the used market if you don't mind a previosly ridden bike.

wow are you guys serious? there aren't recreation cycling bikes for <$200?
geez how come mountains bikes are so freaking cheap when they are on sale? 90% of the people who buy them don't really mountain bike anyways!

Sorry to break it to you but Mountainbikes has never been cheap, unless you talk about Walmart, Target bikes and similar junk.

You can get a hyrbid... like a Specialized Sirrus for $400.

...if you really want a road bike... you can get a Giant OCR3, Trek 1000, Specialized Allez... blah blah... for around $500-600.

An entry level mtn bike will be around $200-300... like the Trek 820... or a Specialized Hardrock.

There is no such thing. For under $200 you will get a crap bike.

I take it you want a road bike. You wont find anything in the $200 range. At best, you can find a closeout Giant OCR3 for $400 after summer season. Now is not the best time to buy if you're on a budget, dealers wont give you anything of a discount since the riding season just started.

I have a 2002 (?) Sirrus.

It's nice but not if you plan on doing any heavy road riding.

First, it has the standard cross handlebars so you can't get the right posture for road biking. You'll need aftermarket handlebars otherwise.

Second, the stock seat hurts like a mofo.

Third, it's not geared for speed. You'll be fine in most cases but if you're trying to keep up with a friend on a road bike, if you don't draft, you're toast.

I just picked up a Hardrock Pro for $530 w/ Enduro 8. Discounts are always available, just need to know where to look.

Could've also got Rockhopper w/ Enduro 8 for $400, GF Marlins for roughly the same price, etc.

What's "good biking?"

The reason why road bikes are so expensive is weight, or the lack of.

Road bikes need to be made out of aluminum alloy or carbon fiber. These are both expensive. Cheap mountain bikes have no weight restriction issues so they can get away with steel frames.

Yea, but you're getting more buying power by purchasing off-season when dealers need to clear out their current year models before next years one come, and before the big winter slump hits them. This is when you can often get wicked deals. I bought my Giant OCR1 for $650 when just a few weeks before labor day it was going for $300 more.

heres a good health-promoting , around-the-block-to-the-grocery-store bike that will last:

black, stealthy, croMo, slick tires, and fenders for rain/mud. good for going to the coffee house and back.
349$

bianchi makes a cool one called the Milano, but it costs alot more.. (for the name, i would reason)

that is a poor generalization. many elite road bikes are still steel, and they cost more than aluminum. some of the very best hand builders in the world (richard sachs, sascha white, nagasawa, etc) are still doing steel exclusively... small sought-after custom houses as well... like independent fabrication.

Wheatmaster: that kona will be a great bike for just general cycling. also, check out the Redline Monocog. they are selling for super cheap around here. It's an oversized bmx/mountain mix... bombproof and singlespeed. no clunky derailleurs or shifters to get in the way. have the shop throw in some city slicks instead of the knobby tires and enjoy the ride.

yeah, going from knobbies to slicks or semi-slicks makes a HUGE difference in pedalling efficiency and overall speed. it'll be quieter, smoother, and faster. I used to run 1.35" wide hutchinson acrobats in place of the stock 1.9" knobbies on my mountain bike and they rolled great...went for tons of miles without ever getting a flat.

if you can, chunk the suspension front fork (if you have one) for a stiffie to save weight and efficiency... once you build up your legs you can even get rid of the gears and go single speed 😀
