I don't have much of a use for it most of the time, but now that I'm 18 I would like to get one for internet orders mostly.

I would pay it ALWAYS in full, and I don't want one with an annual fee, so it would never cost me more that what I'm buying. Don't need much of a credit limit either. Can you use credit cards to get instant cash? But there are big fees for that right?

I juse a Bank One "One card." It's a debit card but you can use it like a credit card to order items online.

You can use credit cards to get instant cash but they have interest for that. And you have it pay it for any cash you take out.
You don't get a month like purchases.

i have a visa-check card as well, you can use it to order stuffs online and such like a CC...

BUT, i want a credit card as well, but since i just turned 18 in april...the only one i can seem to get is a 'secured' one, which is a PITA...

if anyone knows how/where to get one....lemme know plz!! :)

I have an Amex Blue for Students (I'm a 19-year-old college student). I like it because I can get one-time-use credit card numbers.

I am 20 years old, and study credit scores a lot. The best way to do it... when you turn 18, is to find a 5-6 instant online credit apps, make sure you have a job, savings and checking account, etc. Apply for all of them in the same day... because hard inquiries on your credit can lower your score. When you do them all the same day vs. doing them as the applcations come in the mail, you won't have any inquiries because the credit checks don't instantly hit your report when you do them online.

Is ROSSMAN still around? He would know. BTW: Isn't it a bad idea to use a debit card as a credit card online? I keep forgetting whether debit cards have the same protection as a pure credit card. If the number is stolen, would the checking account be wiped out?

If you use a credit card to get cash that's a cash advance and is bad.

Why?

Because interest begins accruing immediately, there is no "25 day interest free grace period".

So unless you're in an emergency or far away from home never use your cc to get cash.

You can usually get better rates from credit unions (if you're eligible to join one), plus I've heard they tend to be more likely to approve you...

If you're just going to be doing Internet orders with it, I would go with a check card through your bank. That way, you're not spending money that you technically don't have. The check card draws on your bank account, so you could only use it when you actually have money.

Interest on a credit card is a bitch, to put it mildly.

Are you going to be a college student? Many credit card companies love student cars. I got my first one about a year ago, a couple of months before I went to college. It's an MBNA Mastercard, started out with a $500 limit which they raised to $1800 (I never requested an increase). I always paid ontime, in full, each month. Back in December I applied for the AMEX Blue for Students, because it looks cool. They gave me a $500 limit, but haven't raised it since then (I asked for an increase and they said no). Tonight I just applied for the Chase PerfectCard, it gives 1% cash back on everything, and 3% back on gasoline purchases (made anywhere). They didn't have an option for students on their application, so I dont know if I will get approved or not, but I figured its worth a shot. I also have a bank account with Chase (although I don't usually keep much money in it, heh), so I figure that might help.

Yes, you are going to need a checking account..how else are you going to pay the bill? Also the Chase card has an annual fee, but if you make 9 charges per year, they wave it..I usually do at least double that each month between the other cards..good luck

Call your local credit union. My Mastercard is only 9% through mine. Even if you can't get approved you can usually get a secured card where you put a certain amount in a saving account and that is your limit on the card. Helps you build credit at least. This is a last resort obviously.

Do all Visa cards give you the extended 1 year warranty on purchases, 90 day returns, and 90 day theft/damage protection?

I was going to recommend this card too. Amex is supposedly good for internet purchases because it's a cinch to make fraud claims with their customer service should any of your online purchases go awry. I still keep my Amex Blue card from my college days just to have an Amex (on top of MC/Visa) and just because it's a cool-looking card.:p

Yea, the Amex Blue is the best looking card I've seen.. I so want that new clear one to replace the solid one I have.. :(

Whoever said to get a check card, it's not a good idea if you're trying to build credit. :)

Good question.

Nope.

My Bank of America/Alaska Airlines VISA does NOT offer 1 year warranty.

However my CitiBank Dividend Platinum Select VISA does offer this and more.

I know how we can find out for sure.

Someone who currently owns an Amazon.com VISA cc has to call VISA Warranty Manager at (800) 882-8057

Give them your Amazon.com VISA credit card number and ask them if it offers warranty manager service?

Found it online:

Visa USA | Personal | Warranty Manager | Detailed Benefits

Key answer: Warranty Manager Service offers Extended Warranty Protection coverage that doubles the free repair period under the original manufacturer's written U.S. repair warranty up to one additional year on eligible warranties of three years or less when an item is purchased entirely with your eligible Visa card.
