Good CPU/System temps?

Hi, I was wondering what good temps would be for my P4 2.4 Ghz CPU and my system which is built on a MSI 655 Max motherboard. I was monitoring them today and the CPU was about 32C and the system about 40-41C. CPU seems ok, but the system seems a little high. And it also crashed when I was playing a game. Any info?

Were those temps at idle(just sitting at desktop, nothing running)? If so, your CPU temp is right on target, but you need to do something about the system (I assume you mean case) temp. Try having an intake fan or 2 in the front of the case, and an exhaust fan or 2 in the back of the case. It might be crashing because the case temp is heating up the video card. I always use to think it was better to have all fans blowing cold air in (if everything got cold air on it it would be cooler), but when I got my temp monitor I learned different!

I think you have those numbers switched around because generally the system temps are lower than the CPU temp...

I think you have those numbers switched around because generally the system temps are lower than the CPU temp...

System temps are always lower than CPU temps on air cooling. I would add a fan or 2 maybe to lower your case temps, but it is not necessary. Even if these are idle temps, they should not cause crashes. What was the crash like? BSOD, reboot, game exit, etc...?

Actually, yes my CPU temp is always lower than my system temp. It may be because the CPU has a good FHS on it, an intake fan above it from the PSU, and two outtake fans on the side of it. There is air going all over that CPU 😀 I have no clue why it is that way, thats exactly what both my BIOS and software say. I live in Phoenix AZ so its pretty hot here, so maybe thats why who knows.

As for the crash, I don't think it was because of overheating now. I was playing Command & Conquer Generals and when I rebooted to WinXP it said that the cause was my video card (ATI RADEON 9500 Pro) and that I needed to update my drivers. I tried playing the game again and sure enough it happened again (although not in the same spot). I just got my system up and running today, and I don't have my DSL hooked up to it yet so all the driver versions I have are factory loaded. Hopefully when I update the drivers it wont ever EVER crash again 😀

Oh yeah, and I am getting two intake fans in the front (currently I only have one on the side). I went to CompUSA and BestBuy a couple days ago but the fans they had were 37dbA or louder, and I want my machine to run quietly. I'm currently looking for some cheap, yet high performance, yet low noise 80mm fans. I think I am going to replace the one side intake fan and the two rear outttake fans as well because they are REALLY loud.

If your aircooled CPU temps are lower than your system temps, you're breaking the laws of thermodynamics.

idling the cpu you CAN get temps lower than system temps.. my cpu temp is even read on die. i can get it cooler than system quite often, this is on air too. of course this is only idle.. under load, obviously i don't really see it being possible in any current cpu that you'd get lower cpu temps (loaded) than the system [on air anyway]. and motherboard to motherboard is always diff as well..even case to case..

i'd suggest getting updated drivers for everything..go from there. those temps even if they are 'backwards' shouldn't cause you probs at default clock.
