Good CPU and System Temps?

I got 2 computers. A P3 450MHz running at 73C with an ABIT BX6 2.0 mobo at 46C, and an Athlon TBird 1GHz running at 54C with an ECS K7AMA mobo at 36C. I am not overclocking anything. I used HMonitor to get these readings. Are these temperatures in good range?

your case temps seem a little high. you might want to increase your case airflow and that might help bring your cpu temps down. for your p3, the cpu temp looks very high. try improving case airflow first, then get a better hsf.

Creedyou - I have a 1Ghz P3 (stock hsf) running on a BE6-II and under a full load it runs around 45C with ambient temperature about 78F. I also had a P3-650 (also stock hsf) and it ran about the same. On the other hand, I had a P3-600 (oem) with some no-name hsf and it generally ran over 60C. Could've gotten a decent hsf and probably got the temps down but I decided to swap it out with 650 instead.

You probably want to check your hsf and get some thermal compound (AS3). With little effort you should be able to get that temp down under 50C.

The TBird is a little high at 54C but certainly not as critical as the 73C temp on the P3.

Yea i agree with everybody else. Iono about the P3 system, but your AMD temps seem high. I'm running a TBird 1.2 with a WBK38 and i get 41C full Load with 79 Ambient Temp.

How the hell do you guys get so low temps? This is really pissing me off. :| I got one 80mm intake fan in both and an exhaust AGP cooler in the AMD and the stock hsf on the AMD. Does the hsf really lower it 10C like you guys have? Also, my comp seems to be running fine with no probs, should I manipulate it even if it runs ok?

Low temps are influenced by heasink/fan combo, case design and case ventilation.

My temps are similar to vck6v3's. XP1600+@1558MHz with Alpha 8045U and Antec 1030 with two Sunons extracting at rear plus one Sunon extracting through PS. CPU idle temp is mid-30s and gaming at 40C.

Hope this helps!

I like either Alpha 8045 or Swiftech heatsinks, BUT your motherboard must have the 4 through-board mounting holes to allow mounting either heatsink. I bought Alpha 8045U, which comes with moderate-noise 80mm Delta fan. Paid about $50 from NewEgg, simply because the 8045 is cheaper than the Swiftech heatsinks.

I've read good reports that the AX7 heatsink is an outstanding heatsink that mounts nicely with clips. Some have claimed that the AX7 is even better than 8045 or Swiftech. AX7 is less expensive also.

Personally, I would choose from those three heatsinks.

I suspect you may have to also work on case ventilation. Even the most efficient heatsink/fan combo will have limited impact on your temperatures if the hot inside the case is not swept out by cooler room ambient temperature room air. The heatsink just recirculates warm air.

Hope this helps!

A good cooling system will keep the case temp within 5 C of the room temp and the CPU temp within 10-15C of the case temp. Of course you can only compare CPU temps from the same model of motherboard. And if your system is running without any BSODs or lockups why worry.

What is BSOD? I don't want the computer to someday just melt or something and also I want to try to keep the computer for a long time.

Microsoft's way of telling you something went really bad. Of course M$ tries to hide them in XP by just rebooting the OS without an explanation, but you can disable the auto-reboot so you can get your BSOD :D

I agree the hsf do make a difference. My friend has the same exact build as one of my computers. I have a retail AMD hsf and he has a volcano instead. His cpu temp. is about 8 degrees higher. What's this about the BSOD's? if your cpu temp is too high the computer will reboot in WIN XP?
