the last remnant.

it is a JRPG for sure, but the battle system takes a little while to figure out. and it can get pretty effing hard at times. i really enjoyed it though.

Get a PS2. Seriously: Persona 3, 4, Xenosaga, Final Fantasy, ...

The PS2 has more good JRPGs than the PC, PS3 and 360 combined.

If not a PS2, then a PS3 so you can play Star Ocean, Disgaea 4, Demon Souls, the HD Ico & Final Fantasy X, ...

Like DaveSimmons said you're probably better off getting a PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3. There haven't been that many Japanese RPGs released for the PC over the years, Final Fantasy VII and VIII, Grandia II and Last Remnant. Hmm... threre's also the indy games Recettear and Chantelise. Not much more than that.

The Xbox 360 had a couple of exclusive old school Japanese RPGs released early in it's life, but not much since. The Nintendo DS and Sony PSP aren't bad for JRPGs.

Lately I've been in the mood for a good console style RPG.
Games like final fantasy vii
Any recommendations?

Septerra Core. It's an oldie and a sci-fi-ish western developed RPG, but the game is all jRPG at heart. Last Remnant that Fenix mentioned is also good, but is a bit more on the strategy side than pure jRPG. But, it still has plenty of jRPG elements.

Oh, if you branch out a bit Anachronox would fit the bill. Kinda hybrid-ish when it comes to certain aspects, but still pulls heavily from traditional jRPGs like FF and Chrono Trigger.

I'll also second this. Most of the good PS2 jRPG's nowadays aren't very expensive used and can still be found easily. My PS2 is 99.9% dead at this point, but thankfully I have a launch PS3 that I'm hoping will hold out until I can finish the enormous PS2 jRPG backlog I have. I have *so* many I still need to finish I'm conptemplating buying another PS2 or original PS3 just in case :p

Thanks for the thoughts people.
I actually already have a PS2 but if jrpg's are that rare on the pc then I guess that can't be helped.

I tried the demo for that when the game was on sale on Steam, but I just couldn't get into it at all. Is the demo not a good example of what the full game is like?

the demo shows off the game reasonably well. the problem with it (because i couldnt figure out wtf i was doing when i tried the demo) was that it didn't explain how the combat system worked, IIRC.

once you have a general idea of how the combat system works, it makes a lot more sense. i couldnt follow the story perfectly, but that's why i read plot summaries as well ;)

turn based RPG's are rare now..

If you want to do it on the PC id go MMO Turn based.

Atlantica Online:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFuY1NprrtU

It should be F2P. Free 2 Play.

It seems pretty fun if u like turn based...
Personally for me turn based gets too mundane after a while.

There's Grotesque Tactics: Evil Heroes, a western indy PC turned-based strategy RPG. Not that good though.

I think you'll find more tradtional turn-based Japanese RPGs on the handhelds than on the consoles these days.

I managed to get FF7 itself work well (incl. original non-midi music) on PC last year, but that was on my older XP system.

Cathulu saves the World is a western RPG based on old school Japanese games. The PS2 probably has the best library. The PSP, PS3, and DS have quite a few. Also, all three are region free, so you can import games.

JRPGs just aren't that popular anymore.

its a hacked version of FF7 which plays flawlessly even on windows 7.

I got this game called rainblood: town of death a few months ago. It's very old school and pretty hard but I've been having fun with it. Technically it's chinese I guess but it's definitely closer to a jrpg than a western one.

If you have a powerful enough gaming rig you can run pcsx2 and play PS2 games in Higher Res and with AA. With the rig in my sig I played Xenosaga rendered at somewhere between 720p and 1080p(I forget) with 4xAA. It looked absolutely amazing compared to a ps2. Of course not all games run perfect but the for the ones that do I'd rather play them on the emulator over an actual ps2 just for the graphics.
