ARGH. i've been rejected by my current school for the cs dept (university of washington) so my parents are making me transfer to a school whose cs department will take me. :| :(

got any suggestions? i'm pretty sure i can't transfer to harvard or mit, because even if i was good enough, i've got too many credits (i'm a junior).

so far i've got on my list: stanford, the UC schools... something about university of arizona or colorado? are those any good?

thanks y'all.

if i can get into any of the UC CS programs, i'd gladly go. i dunno though, i've been doing really good in school for the past year, but i really f*cked up my freshman year, and my gpa is 3.3... should be a 3.4 after this quarter. (i've gotten really good grades in the 2 cs courses i took, though)

if you guys have any advice or anything for a junior with a soon to be 3.4, i'd be glad to hear that too... i'm so bummed :( and now my parents are going to say stuff like "well, you should have studied harder / listened to us" :| grr. and the worst part is, it IS my fault because they kept on telling me to take less classes but to do better in them, but i insisted on taking more than i could handle. ARGH.

Georgia Tech's program is nothing to sneeze at....I guarantee you will meet few women at GT tho. Fortunately, Atlanta as a whole is well-stocked with beautiful women.:D

Talk to the advisors and see if there's anything you can do to bolster your application (if you decide to stay at UW and reapply for Fall quarter). A friend of mine was rejected for Fall, took CSE341 (programming languages for CSE majors) and MATH308 (matrix algebra), and got admitted for Spring. Feel free to PM me about this.

If you want to stay in state, Washington State University and Western Washington University both have a CS department.

hmm, that's encouraging... i have a coworker who applied 3 times and never got in though... he's in acms right now. i will probably reapply for fall quarter, since that's when i'd be applying for other schools anyways (it's too late for fall admission, i can only go for spring admission now). i'll be applying for CE as well, since by then i'll have the prereq classes. so here's for hoping eh? i think i will talk to the advisors. i'm also applying for informatics, but i'd really like to be in CS because i've heard nothing but bad stuff about informatics (too easy, too people oriented, etc).

If you want to stay in state, Washington State University and Western Washington University both have a CS department.

eh, i'd feel like a traitor :p

Not sure how it stacks up against the rest of the nation as far as CS goes, but here at Clemson, the CS department isn't bad. And unlike Georgia Tech, we have plenty of attractive females here. :)

There's a reason I didn't mention Informatics. ;)

I somehow fell into a loophole and got into CE under "Early Admissions." At the time of my application, I had 124 credits with a 5-credit summer class in progress. One thing I remember from an info session is that they look at the student's drive and desire to get into the department if they don't get accepted the first time. The best thing to do is talk to them and see if they'll let you into a CSE majors class. If you haven't registered for classes yet, do so for classes that go towards CS/CE grad requirements and make sure you do well in them. Show them you want to be there.

[shameless plug]
Microsoft and the UW ACM will be sponsoring an XBox tournament March 1st (tomorrow!) from 5:30-10:30 in HUB108. Registration for the tournament (game unknown; maybe Halo or an unreleased game) begins at 5:00. Free admission, free pizza, free Krispy Kreme. First 75 people get a prize, and it's not a yo-yo.

thanks fatalbo... would you say it's more important to get the prereqs for ce or more important to take the cse class? because i don't want to take more than 10 credits next quarter, and i still need to take math 307 and phys 123 for the ce reqs.

:Q Not that it matters but you never struck me as a Chinese guy...

Anyhow, I see you have UC on top there. Here's some suggestions from EECS types...If you don't get into EECS, there's also CS in the college of letters and science but CS in the college of engineering is easier to get into cuz no one knows it exists :)

Do whatever you can to show that you're taking the right classes towards a CS or CE degree. However, I don't think you should go with less than 12 credits because it may give off the impression that you're slacking for a quarter to pull up your GPA.

You obviously can't enroll in a CSE majors class without talking to the advisors. My understanding of the situation is that they'll let you take a majors class to see if you can hang with people in the department. If they decide to let you do this and give you an option for classes, then go for 341 (programming languages), 378 (machine organization and MIPS assembly programming), or 370 (intro to digital design). You'll have a pretty strong case if you can pull a 3.6 or higher in any of those courses, especially 378. 378 is one of the most hardcore non-theory 300-level classes in the department. I had to drop this one, but I'll be retaking it next Fall because it's a grad requirement.

This is just my opinion and understanding of the process based on my own and others' experiences. The advisors will definitely give you a better answer. Schedule an appointment with them as soon as you can so you can register for the right courses for Spring. It's probably best to do this in person, even if it is with the receptionist, so they can match a face to a name.

<< CSE or CE?!?!?! >>

CSE = Computer Science and Engineering
CS = Computer Science, under the College of Arts & Sciences
CE = Computer Engineering, under the College of Engineering
The first is used a little too much at UW because the two departments are so closely related. For all intents and purposes, you can declare yourself a CS major and take a bunch of CE-related classes (embedded systems, VLSI, digital design) before graduating. The converse isn't true however, because CE falls under the College of Engineering and they have less electives.

It's not that...it's just that the guys who agree with me here on ATOT invariably end up being middle-aged white guys from Texas and Florida

Almost forgot; watch how many credits you have at this point. If you get past a certain number of credits (110, I believe?) and have not declared your major or gotten your pre-major status extended, you won't be able to register for classes.

well, i've been taking 10-12 credits for the past 3 quarters...

Nice to see some other UW people here. I am only a lowly freshman getting my butt kicked by math, heh. Thanks for mentioning that XBOX torunament, I will be sure to check it out tomorrow. :)
