Good college to study music?

Well, I currently attend ITT Tech (the college on TV commercials) for Computer Electronics Tech and well, it's a joke. I've re-evaluated what I wanted to do with my career. I'm interested in studying music and I'm wondering if there are any decent schools for studying music. Right now I live near Buffalo N.Y., though I'm more interested in relocating west, preferrably to Nevada or California or somewhere out west.

yeah. good luck not losing your mind there. it's so easy to get into, but extremely hard to stay. it has one of the highest drop out rates of any school in the nation.

Is the curriculum that difficult?

All the schools listed are excellent. Also University of Boston has a very good music program as well. What kind of music major do you think you'll go into? Performance? History? Theory?

I'm thinking Performance or Theory. I play guitar, though I want to study music because I think if that doesn't work out I want to be a music instructor.

Agreed. Great, albeit competative music school (my HS's drumline prodegy went there for it). However, if it's choral music your into, I have to reccomend the University of Delaware. I've been singing since 5th grade with private lessons, and compared to most, the choral program is great (I'm currently a member of their chamber choir, and have heard the other choirs). The rest of the our music program appears to be good, but I haven't really investigated it yet (I'm a Computer Engineering Major). It's also strong in other areas if you want to change.

Not looking to offend anyone, but honestly I think a lot of ppl at Berklee are the types who go into music as a major thinking all they have to do is play an instrument to get a degree and it's not actual work. While it is definitely "musical Ivy League" material compared to many other programs (god forbid you want to become a Music Production & Engineering major), I don't think you can throw that stat out there without considering the applicant pool as well...

25/M, 5min from Berklee, semi-retired music professional here 🙂

Out of pure curiosity, what do you want to do with Music? And why are you switching from something which has a very high probability of netting you a career (IT) to something with a very small chance of doing so?

That's where I went. After 3 years, I realized the prospects for getting into a top orchestra (trumpet major) were slim and I didn't want to teach, so I switched to CompSci and graduated in 5 years.

Still, an excellent music school.

Univeristy of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. Top notch music program, especially jazz....even though it's midwest, and not the west.
