good cheap sound card

I'm trying to get a basic system up and running for a friend. The card will be mainly used for listening to mp3s and possibly some recording as well.

While I'm at it, any decent cheap video cards out there? Won't be used for playing games, mostly web surfing.

The computer will be running w2k pro.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Also, any suggestions of where to buy it would be great too.

creative sblive! values can be had as a great soundcard under 50 bucks on pricewatch. if you're listening to mp3's at all, you're gonna NEED a decent soundcard, else your gonna be unhappy that you went cheap.

It depends on what kind of speakers you have. If you have nice speakers I would get a live value. If you don't have a very nice set of speakers and know you will not be upgrading them the guillemont MUSE isn't a bad choice either.

I'd spend the extra for the live though.

You just want a decent stereo card right? $8 for a Vortex1 🙂 Not a great gaming card becuase it's only 2 channel, but MP3s are only 2 channel so it doesn't matter. The Vortex cards have good sound quality, and it's hard to beat $8

The matrox g400 or even g200 would be a good choice for a nongamer that wants the best 2d quality. These cards are pretty cheap now because of poor 3d, but the still have the best 2d out.
