Good cheap frozen food brands?

I just tried some Safeway brand lasagna, 1/3 of a 5lb package, and it sucked. The filling is more or less just sauce. One should not be drinking one's lasagna...

I've tried Costco brand and their filling is nice and meaty, but it also has some kind of cheese filling which is awful. I've always been impressed with Stouffer's and will probably try them next.

I'm looking for something $5/lb or less. I've tried Encore and hated it. I guess Safeway brand sucks. Stouffer's is good but pricey IMO. Costco is good. Any others?

did you cook it the right way? i always get the Safeway brand Meat Lasagna, and it never comes out 'watery' or too saucy. Then again, i let it defrost fully from frozen before cooking. I also find that if ya cook it a little longer with the cover off, it comes out juuust right..

I cooked it for about 20 min longer than it stated on the package, and I cooked it from frozen. It's not "watery" but "saucy" ie. a ton of tomato based sauce, not enough ground beef.

oh eh... my bad then.. i misunderstood.

that's one of the down sides to more 'affordable' lasagna.... too much sauce, not enough substance 🙁
found the same thing with King Soopers, Safeway and Albertsons around here..

making your own lasagna isn't any more expensive and is much tastier. probably healthier too. unless you're dumping tablespoons of salt into it.

Ahhhh... I see. Ok, going to be avoiding King Soopers, Safeway, and Albertsons brands then. Sure, it's cheap, but after eating the Safeway lasagna I thought about dumping the rest... to me it's just thin strips of pasta in tomato sauce, not even worth the, what, $2/lb I paid? It just wasn't enjoyable, but good texture is a big part of enjoyment for me in addition to the taste.

just grab stouffer's salisbury steak or mac and cheese family size and eat the whole thing

hmmmmmmmmmm

kind of pricey though

Can be found on sale pretty much all the time, in So Cal at least. I get 4-5 of the dinners or large Pot Pies for $10. See them 2 or $2.50 each at least every 2 weeks. The Beef Pot Pie is AWESOME! I love the Chicken Fried Steak dinner too. Possibly the best Pot Pie in the world though. 4 for $10 is sweet but when they're 5 $10 you can't beat it, unless you get Banquet, which is horrible, but cheap.

Claim Jumpers also has some great frozen food. I dunno if they're nation wide though.

Trader Joe's has good frozen foods. Not sure it falls in your price point though. Still, they aren't THAT expensive.

Good frozen food? Kind of an oxymoron, especially with the cheap modifier. Don't get me wrong, the stuff is edible and it is always good to get 6000% of your RDA of sodium, but FF is supposed to be convenient, not good.

Salt is not unhealthy for you if you have good kidneys. You could take in 1000% RDA of sodium per day and still be fine.

It's the intake of saturated fats that you should watch out for.

A lot of frozen foods have high saturated fat per serving. However, there are good news as there are some frozen foods that are low in saturated fats. You just have to look at the nutrition label carefully.

^^ This. You have full control over the quality of ingredients going into the lasagna, and after you are done you can cut it up into single portions, which you then wrap and freeze.
