Good cell phone company?

I've been using Tmobile for a bit over a year now, but last month they doubled their text messaging rates. I took advantage of that opportunity to get out of contract. Their service has been going downhill, and their phone selection kind of blows at this point. So I'm looking at some other companies right now. In my area (Northern Colorado):

Sprint
Qwest (I work for them though, and there's no way in hell I'd sign up for their service)
Verizon
Cingular
And of course, T-Mobile.

Anybody have any experiences with any of these companies? Any to avoid? Any that are really good?

T-mobile
Chepest and the worst

Spring/Nextel
Cheaper and almost the worst

Cingular/ATT
Ok, but they are losing more customers while Verizon is gaining customers
 
I did the same as you, I went with Cingular b/c I wanted to stay with a GSM carrier since I swap phones so much. So far CSR and service has been great. The taxes suck but I am in Florida and knew about the high taxes before signing up. Plus where I am moving in a few months Cingular has better coverage than Tmobile.
 
When I signed my contract text messaging was 5 cents per message. Since text messaging is an included part of the typical T-Mobile basic pack (you can't have it taken off), they legally have to allow you the option to opt-out of your contract. There should be a statement about it in your last bill (fine print, hidding somewhere obscure), giving you 30 days to cancel without any penalty. You could also call customer service.

This has not been my observation. Do you have data to back up this claim?

I find that verizon and cingular coverage quality varies from area to area, but one huge advantage cingular has over verizon is the ability to change your SIM card without having to get the carrier involved (GSM vs TDMA). The has never been a sim card in any verizon phone I've ever looked at.

I also don't think the quality of verizon phones competes with cingular phones. Nokia's some of the most hardy phones out there. Only Nextel's i510 (or is it 530?) is better than the standard nokia brick IMHO

How are the price plans? Decent? Text messaging costs? What about phone options? I already have a Razr, so if I sign up for another GSM carrier I want another fun phone.

I had AT&T a few years ago and hated the experience... though that could be because I had a craptacular Sony-Ericsson phone.

Well you cant beat tmobile prices, so its hard to compare, but I got the 1500 minute plan no rollover no nights and weekends for $49, the same plan is $39 at Tmobile.

You can get the black razor or the sony w600 walkman from Cingular. I am using the Sony s710a right now
 
I've been with Cingular for about 5 years now. I was an early adopter of their GSM service and suffered a little bit while they built out the network.
Nowadays the service is great, I can't remember the last time I dropped a call. I'm also a fan of Nokia hardware so Verizon is pretty much out on that aspect. Besides the fact that I hate Verizon with a burning passion and want horrible things to happen to them.

My friend works for Verizon. He said Verizon releases a list every month for all the cell phone carriers that show new contracts - canceled contracts.

Im sure this information is public but I dont know where to find it.
