What's a good cab or merlot in the $8-$12 range?

I drink yellow tail and fetzer a lot and looking to branch out.

Good question Jadow, I like Yellow Tail too and would like to know as well. 🙂

Depending on where you're from, you may have better luck with local wines to get something good in that price range. Here, in Washington my favorite cabs and merlots in that price range are Cheateu St Michelle and Columbia Winery.

Ravenswood is good and reliable. Fetzer too. Clos du Bois is easy to find and quite drinkable (and makes a good oaky chardonnay that I like even though I'm not too into whites and "oaky" is currently out of fashion with chardonnay). Bonterra (organic) is good to bring to a party if your friends do a lot of Whole Foods style shopping.

hogue makes a a cab-merlot mix that I am fond of.
Also you might want to try branching out into malbec. There are some great malbec from argentina if you want a good red.

Blackstone is another good one, and Kenwood (mmm). Mondavi is decent and reliable, as is Kendall Jackson. I'm leaving out a lot of very good wineries just because you won't typically find them in your price range, but they could occasionally be on sale (Sebastiani, Seghesio, Fransiscan, Parducci, Dry Creek, etc.)

I prefer ejected waste water from a hooker's anus after flushing it with a standpipe and doing circles of blow off of her rectum.

my ole lady the wino swears by the cab Toro y el Concho (this is actually a mix of cab and merlot). it's cheap and tasty and Chilean. i however prefer shinerbock.

linkage.

I've been pretty happy with Barefoot branded wines as of late. Krogers has them for $5-$7 depending on the variety. Had the Pinot Grigio last night and it was very refreshing.

The cab was very smooth too.

I've really liked some of the spanish reds I've found at my local wine shops in that price range as well.
