I remember the good ol' days of Alpha Beta.

aaahhh, alpha beta... the only store in the area i grew up in. also the only place to play any video games. abco took out the games when they bought the chain in arizona. bastards.

They changed the Albertson by my house to Savemart. The service and ambiance took a nosedive.

I vaguely remember Alpha-Beta, I was real young at the time. The one thing I remember about them, is they were the only store that sold Banana Flavored Nestle Quick.

They get a  for that.

IIRC, Albertson's is a pretty big company owns a few different chains. I think the Albertson's property near me is an Acme. Kind of overpriced and the service leaves something to be desired. Safeway FTW! :p

the price of food has gone up a lot at the stores here, regardless of which food chain it is...

Yeah, Save Mart bought all the Albertsons in California from Fresno/Visalia area northward. I don't know what's going on with the rest of 'em.

Albertson's was a bit pricey, but I tended to stick to the Preferred Card items that were cheaper. Save Mart sales prices aren't as low as the old card prices. :frown:

Now I go to WinCo. It's ok, but you have to go early in the morning before it's crowded.

Hmm... Beav-Hills and Shattuck is still open. The store is older and rundown a bit, but their meat prices are the best. $6/lb. specials for good quality 2" thick ribeyes run almost every day. That store used to be walking distance from my old house, and I miss it. Now I live closer to Garden Home Thriftway and their prices and meat dept. just freakin stink (literally in the case of the meat dept.) as Lamb's is trying to pretend it can be a neighborhood grocery store and a New Seasons-style premium organic grocer both at the same time, and that just doesn't work.

Okay, yeah, Meijer is pretty good for one stop shopping. It was more expensive than the other place (I forgot the name) in Central Illinois, but the Meijer in Champaign was better than the Wal Mart and the other grocery stores if going to just one place was the plan.

Meijer is better than anything we have in Southern California and it's less expensive than the Publix stores in Central Florida.

IIRC, "Joe Albertson's Supermarkets"(you gotta be pretty old to recognize that one) got bought out several years ago by Lucky's, which got bought out by Save-Mart. They just left some of the Albertson's stores under that name, perhaps for name recognition. (not really sure) Personally, I was glad to see the last Albertson's close here. (Fiddle, I'm just down the road from you in Modesto) The store always smelled bad, had rude clerks (for the most part) and their prices weren't all that great, except for some of the sales.
