I have tried the desktop bookshelfs + T-amp route recently...Objectively the sound is indeed a lot better than my previous Promedia 2.1 but the bass reflections was too strong with the rear wall of my room which gave me massive headaches. So back to a satellite+sub combo again. :|

YMMV but I will argue room placement and treatment is a far more important factor than anything else when it comes to loudspeakers.
