Neil Stevenson's Snowcrash, The Diamond Age and Zodiac are excellent.
Idlewild by Nick Sagan was my most recent read and excellent.
I read Twilight and similar books with my wife and I would recommend them if you're a female.
Steven Erickson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series is excellent (first book: Gardens of the Moon)
Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe is classic
Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber are amazing.
A Song of Ice and Fire by Martin is good, but he hasn't finished it and I rather doubt he ever will.
The Dark Tower is Steven King's best work.
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
Anything by Neil Gaiman is good.

I'm reading The Fountainhead right now...haven't gone too far, only on page 70.

All I can say about it is that...Ayn Rand likes architects?

I'm into classics:

Catch 22
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Slaughterhouse Five (actually any Vonnegut is good)
Watership Down
Brave New World
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Also:
Hotel - Arthur Hailey
Once a Runner - John L. Parker

For a fast exciting read, if you haven't already read them:
Angels & Demons
The Da Vinci Code

I would recommend that you visit a local bookshop and talk to the owner about your past favourites, and genres that interest you. They should be able to recommend some good titles, and the used books are dirt cheap.

You're into post-modern fiction, not "the classics". I agree with your taste however.

Well a good book admittedly is subjective....

are you really asking about 'great' or 'classic' books?

I think of a good book as something that enjoyed reading, whether it be for simple entertainment or learned something insightful (ie Nassim Taleb's The Black Swan)

a great/classic book would be not only popularly read/cited, but also remain enduringly popular and relevant throughout the decades. For example, as long as people continue to invest in hype and businesses continue to engage in creative accounting in order to make their earnings attractive, the Intelligent Investor will ALWAYS give sound and relevant advice about basic investing fundamentals.

I just finished reading the Inheritance Saga (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr). I thought it was pretty good.

I today decided to start reading The Princess Bride. The book seems to be just about as goofy as the movie.

The Trial by Franz Kafka

Is it any better than 'The Metamorphosis'? Man that story was dry and depressing.

I thought The Metamorphosis was a great book, so you probably shouldn't take my word for it :p

The Trial is even more depressing than The Metamorphosis in my mind. However, there are a lot of funny moments as well. Might be my favorite book.

WEB Griffin's Presidential Agent series is a fun read if you like Tom Clancy kind of stuff. Brad Thor also wrote some really good books in that genre.

Some other ones to consider:
The 5000 Year Leap - W. Cleon Skousen
Liberal Fascism - Jonah Goldberg
The Forgotten Man - Amity Schlaes

The Wheel of Time series is no good. Avoid it.

That reminds me of another book to avoid - "A Wrinkle in Time". It was one of the few books I struggled getting through back in grade school. *shivers* I need to go find a copy of Dune to cheer myself up now...

An excellent read. It's not so much that she likes architects, but the type of mind attracted to such a pursuit. I could discuss this further, but I won't derail the thread.

Personally, I liked this a lot, but enjoyed The Fountainhead more.

I loved 'Three cups of tea'. I highly recommend it.
Another good book is 'The girl with the dragon tattoo'.

Check these out at Amazon.
