I think "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein is mu current favorite.
 
Farseer or Tawny Man (Kind of a sequel to Farseer) trilogies by Robin Hobb are excellent. I'm currently on my 3rd read of the Tawny Man trilogy 🙂

It is a fantasy, but the magic aspect is very tastefully done and not way over the top with fireballs and stuff.

Once, I went back and decided to read a bunch of classics that my high school just never got around to for one reason or another. I read Catcher in the Rye, and also a very similar novel called Crazy around the same time. It was very interesting the read the two and contrast/compare them. But then, I'm a reading geek and like that sort of thing. Also, the Chronicles of Narnia (Puddlefoot...I love him) are quite good if you have never read them. The Bell Jar is an interesting read, but probably more meaningful for women I think. It's a portrait of a young woman going insane, being treated, and then reintegrating when there's really nothing insane about her, she just wasn't like other women.

Maybe you should tell us what you like to read and then we can more appropriately suggest?

Seconded, tell us the general type of thing you like and you age, and we can give you many recommendations. I read about a hundred books a year, I have quite a few good books I can recommend.
