Good bone to give to dog?

So I want to improve my dogs tooth health, and I know a bone is a good way to do this. What kind of bone should I give him? Are there any recommended ones?

Also, I've heard a raw cow bone is good, is this true? Do I just get one at the bucher?

I think one of those fake processed bones are the best kind. Anything but a chicken bone will do.

I've yet to find a bone for my German Shepherds that either

a) Lasts more than 30 seconds

or

b) Doesn't pose a choking hazard

From what I've read, real bones should not be given to dogs due to the potential for splintering into dangerously sharp pieces.

We just give our puppy sticks similar to rawhide but the healthier, safer alternative to actual rawhide. Our pet shop also sells chew toys that are similar to actual bones but don't splinter.

I think it's only the cooked bones that splinter. What's the rawhide alternative?

Greenies are ok.

You need to brush his teeth.

No matter what you give him, watch him for awhile and make sure he isn't swallowing big chunks.

Most dog trainers/people insist that any 'real' bone is a huge hazard for a dog. My pup eats them slowly while supervised so I'm not terribly worried. I don't leave it with him during the day.

You've gotta be really careful with those "Nylabones". Even though they don't splinter, they can still get a big enough piece off them that will get lodged in their intestines, and they'll never digest because they are synthetic.

We buy the deer antlers for our dogs that you can get at most pet stores. They love them and I have never seen them come close to splintering. We have a beagle and a beagle golden mix.

Listen to me, I know what I'm talking about.

If you want a "bone" that lasts a long time get a deer antler chew like this: http://www.amazon.com/Antler-Dog-Nat...ntler+chew+toy

My dog loves them and they last freaking forever. They're safe.

I also just got my dog this 'peanut butter' filled bone a few weeks ago.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o02_s00_i00
It's huge and heavy and it keeps him busy forever. When he starts to lose interest I'll just smear a little more peanut butter on the inside. This thing and the antlers rock.

I'm not sure what the one we have is made of but it's called a deer antler. But my wife shares your concern which is why she has hidden it from both the puppy and me.

I can't remember what it is made of but the sales person said it's like rawhide but it doesn't give puppies the stomachache that they get from real rawhide. It's a brown color and is shaped in sticks typically. Puppy can not get enough of it, though he prefers to chew it only when someone else is holding it steady so it doesn't move while he goes to town on it.

One of our beagles managed to splinter one of those. They did love them though.

Yeah I don't want to get him Nylabones. I've heard about the chunks breaking off and getting lodged in the intestines thing. Freaks me out. I've also heard about the dogs choking on the rawhide.

Go to a butcher at a real meat market and get a beef leg bone. Provided your dog survives the heart attack he sustains when realizing you're actually giving it to him, it will last a very long time, sometimes years as they continue to gnaw away at it.

Imo avoid the expensive fake bones that they will eat in one or two sittings, which often has who-knows-what cr@p in it. Chicken bones can splinter and pork bones are also often too soft for big dogs and can be a choking hazard if the dog swallows a large chunk.

Same, elk antlers, the ones that are really big. He loves them and there's no way he could splinter them with how thick they are. We avoid the smaller ones (deer?) because I always worry he would choke on it or break it. We only let him have something like that if we're both around.

100lb chocolate lab approved.

Our dog prefers to tug or fetch things though, definitely a more interactive player. He'll settle down with something like the above every now and then but he's still young so he just wants to play all the time still. It's damn hard finding something that isn't made in China though, no fucking way I would ever let my dog have something like that.

Don't get him anything processed and you'll be fine, they naturally will know what to do with it. By processed that includes COOKED bones, as well as treated hides.

Uncooked chicken bones are safe but they will get devoured by a larger dog, so go for a bone that carries a lot of weight as it will be stronger and more dense. So beef leg bone is your best bet.

I gave my shepherd a few of these and he loved them, never had a problem.

No bones are 100% safe. It depends on how your dog eats, but most dogs will consume ragged, sharp chunks. Any animal bone, cooked or raw, can splinter, become ragged and would be dangerous if swallowed. Dogs do not need bones for either nutrition or dental hygiene. Skip them entirely, they provide absolutely no benefit.

So what the hell should i give him to chew on that'd also be good for his dental health?

Where would I even get a beef leg bone? Also, my dog is a 20lb dachshund, not large by any means.

LOL. I don't think your dachshund could even lift a beef leg bone.
