I have kept up with a 250cc bike at 80mph.. and he was quite comfy.. infact I was getting a lot more knocked around because my bike doesnt have a fairing. However he did get knocked a bit when we crossed a big rig.. but then that's teh only time when the 250's weight is a problem.. but its not like you will totally get taken off track .. but it happens.. especially if you got a cross wind.. its more predominant.
Yeah, my 550 had a fairing, but I was talking about a cross-wind and big trucks going by.

light bikes are extremely difficult to use on the highway considering your weight. I had an old 500 that i started on, as well as a 440. Around 75mph, the wind would just toss me and the slightest bit of wind would lift me or shift me to the other side of the lane. Granted, i'm not a big guy (6'0", 170lbs), but if you're planning to do ANY highway riding, i'd stay away from the 250. But like the_good_guy said, it's a great bike to learn throttle control, which will prepare you for your next bikes thereafter.

I've seen a 250 around campus this past semester, and it's a nice looking bike. I have a '01 500R that I picked up during the summer, and it's been great thus far. Not too heavy, but also not too light, great for riding around the twisty streets of a college town, and much easier to park than a car while also being a helluva lot more fun. I plan on moving up to a 600 or 750 as soon as I can find the $$, but definitely start small and work your way up. I learned to ride on a Ducati 900SS, and when I take it out nowadays I wonder how I didn't kill myself, heh.

Make sure you're in his Last Will and Testiment.
Not saying he's not capable since i don't know him, but most guys that buy that as a first bike are doing it for the image and to go possing. Bet him $100 he'll drop it within the first 2 months of owning it.
I'd(thankfully it was a beater bike that i had)
