The reporter of this article must be related to the owner of the newspaper or something. How is it that the complaint of *1* student gets a column, but at the end as an after thought, "Last week, Orange County was the center of another tense racial incident when Thalia Surf Shop in Laguna Beach received harsh scrutiny for offering 20% off all-black colored items for Martin Luther King Jr. Day."

"Tense" being an operative word and how does this "fit" clothing targeted to Latinos and/or African Americans.

In other words, another dubious "was it worth the mention"?

Chicken & Watermelon Themes

Analysis of a large collection of artifacts with racist African American imagery reveals several common themes. One is the linking of Black people in a negative way to chicken and watermelon. The origins of these stereotypes are unclear. They may have begun as Southern stereotypes and then evolved into Black stereotypes. It's also possible that these evolved out of American slavery. Numerous primary sources chronicle Black resistance to slavery through "silent sabotage," or, day-to-day acts of resistance. Stealing from the master was one example. It seems logical that, given that food would be among the most desirable of items a slave would pilfer, and chickens and watermelons would have been commonly available. Solomon Northup, for example, tells of being put in charge of punishing slaves who got into the master's watermelon patch. Rather than carry out the punishment, Northup had the slaves show him the way to the patch. The connecting of Blacks to chicken and watermelon was done in a way to dehumanize Blacks and subject them to ridicule. This process helped contribute to prejudice and discrimination. Surprisingly, many young people are unaware of the long history of these stereotypes, while some older Black people refuse to eat watermelon because of that history. And yet the stereotype still exists. In 1989, while stationed at a Marine Air Station in Yuma, Arizona, I was standing in line at the chow hall and noticed a particular theme in the day's cuisine. The main offerings that day were fried chicken, black-eyed peas, and watermelon. I soon realized, to my horror, that it was Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. I do not know if this gesture was intended as a racist joke, or if the head cook really thought that offering such food was a way of honoring Dr. King.

It seems that this is a pretty common racist joke

Actually... not really "racist". Definitely in bad taste, but people are getting way too sensitive these days.

We have a black president. People in my generation and younger don't care what a persons skin color is. MLK's dream has come true.

To be fair, blacks and white apologists probably account for more than .001 percent.

I was mainly refering to this:

"The meal passed uneventfully except for one member of the Black Student Union, who lodged a formal complaint, she said."

Meh, the OP for Chinese people would be to hand out free dry cleaning coupons on Chinese New Year.

Wouldn't be the same though, people don't make fun of chinese people for running dry cleaning businesses. But black people are ridiculed for liking Fried Chicken, while this complain's utterly fucking stupid. I have seen white people 1st hand do their impersonation of a black person eating chicken.

It's dumb and I don't know why anyone would make fun of someone for liking fried chicken because it's fucking delicious.

I think it's not really a negative stereotype though, just a stereotype. Guess it depends on who you ask.

Whenever one black person or white liberal complains, they complain for all liberals, minorities, and women. Thats part of their charter rules.

Black people like waffles? Since when? Eventually every food group will be labeled as black people food.

iirc, it's genetic and they can't help themselves. It's a common misconception that they eat it because it's delicious, but this theory has be debunked on numerous occasions.
