Well this is over your budget, but just to put it in front of you, the new Jaguar X-Type ($32k) will have AWD standard.

Question: Audi's Quattro system is permanent right? Because I read that the TT's AWD system isn't. It drives the FW, and when the computer detects slippage, the RW's kick in...

dcdomain, Audi has two different Quattro systems. The one in the TT is different from all others. I believe that it is electronically controlled as opposed to the full time mechanically driven system in their sedans.

The AWD system in the TT is the same system that VW puts into the 4Motion Passats.

- 88-89 Mazda 323 GTX
- 91 GMC Scyclone
- 92-93 GMC Typhoon
- 90-92 Eagle Talon TSi AWD Turbo
- 90-91 BMW 325ix

All of these suggestions should meet your 10K requirement. Heck, you should be able to find a 323 GTX for pennies on the dollar, but they are difficult to locate.

Whatever you do, be safe and have fun.

My 2 cents.

Get a 1st generation dsm(talon/eclipse/laser) for around 5k, spend the rest for an engine rebuild, turbo, exhaust, fmic, fuel setup and you've got your self a 12second 1/4mile warrior.

vi_edit, you are correct!!! TT is a sportier car and thus they made it lighter by not using a mechanical awd sys. the quattro in the a4's is all time all wheel drive. im buying new tires for my a4 today infact. these will be unidirectional for more traction. :)

yes, i think the consensus is that Audi has the best package when it comes to AWD. sure subaru has good AWD as well, but the rest of the car can't touch an audi. But a 4-5 year old Audi and you will be very satisfied. Also brand new VW's can be had with the same quattro system as Audi, but only on the newest models, and it'll jack your price up a bit.

we have 2 audi's with quattro, one a 97 A6 that's very nice, and a 1985 with at least 300k on it and still going strong.

Saturnine, have you "chipped" or done any other mods to your A4 yet? ;)

So if they wanted the TT to be more sporty, why didn't they make it RWD and then have the FW kick in when the computer senses slippage instead of their current config? I heard RWD adds weight but with the driving mechanics, everyone is always busting on FWD cars. They got rid of the permanent and then put in a FWD to make it sportier?
