I'm gonna be in LA for the Classic Tetris Championships August 8th, along with a crew of the best classic Tetris players. I haven't much played it in about 20 years or so, but it'll be fun seeing how the scene progressed. Anyhow, $1k first place, details at this web site :

http://www.tetrischampionship.com

and the documentary they're making :

http://www.ecstasyoforder.com

and .. a trailer by Robin Mihara (3rd place NWC, and I haven't seen him since the NWC!) ..

Show up and you might be in the film 🙂 If any of the AT'ers come, ask for Thor 🙂

You haven't played much in the last 20 years? Maybe you should...play a few rounds befor the tournament? 😛

I played on http://www.tetrisfriends.com/ for a while, was a lot of fun. I still like Tetris Attack way more. In fact, who wants to play Tetris attack online? 😀

I bet its way more competitive now. Exponentially.

Well, I think you're right if you look at Tetris as a whole. The thing about this contest is that its going to be using NES Classic Tetris, which is incredibly difficult relative to pretty much any other version. The controls are wonky, the auto-delay and auto-repeat are incredibly slow, the pieces are incredibly 'sticky', there's no hard drop, there's no hold, etc. Only a couple of people have been able to hit the 999k max-out score since the time I did it in 1990. So someone going from a more modern version who is quite good might have a helluva hard time with this.

To put it in relative terms, I'm somewhat above-average at TetrisFriends, I can hit low 40-second 40-line games (which is waaaaay slower than the best of the best, putting down sub-30-second games!). In NES Tetris, getting 40 lines at say level 19 is going to take longer than 40 seconds, and it's going to be incredibly tricky for most players to do at all.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the TF and other modern keyboard-based games with hold/etc adapt to this really basic hardcore version.

Another thing about NES Tetris, the pieces are hellishly random. You can go 50 pieces without seeing a straight bar, or get 8 square blocks in a row, it's just brutal sometimes.

Hah, yeah I just haven't had the desire or the time to do so. 20 years ago I was 13 with all the time in the world, now I'm 33 and a father of a 3-year-old. I really don't even want to compete, but the producers are kind of insisting that I do. I'm looking forward to seeing someone else win, someone that is passionate about the game and having fun with it, and seeing the bar rise along with a look back for people at true raw no-frills hardcore tetris.

did anyone see "The King of Kong?"

it's about breaking the Donkey Kong high score. Oh man...lot's of hilarity and strangeness, and sore disappointment. rather interesting flick, really. Never seen such an uber dork play the villain before. haha.

anyways, GL, op.

so, is it NES system or an arcade Nintendo Tetris?

I'm completely astonished by the amount of knowledge, and technical proficiency required to actually "compete" on those arcade classics. It's nuts.

but those NES controls sure did suck, too.

dude i love tetris. I used to play tetrinet all the time. With specials/Without specials. If I was in the area I would definitely be there.

I thought King of Kong was brilliant.. didn't know what to expect but i was impressed!

Definitely 🙂

Did you check out the short teaser for the upcoming film? I'm interested to get feedback. Adam Cornelius is the guy doing it, he seems pretty talented IMHO. Hope the film comes off nicely.

It's gonna be NES Tetris.

Oh yeah, Alexey Pajitnov (Tetris Creator) is going to be live videoconference from Moscow 🙂 That should be fun. I met him at the Summer CES '91 in Vegas, helluva nice guy.

NES Tetris was my favorite version of it's kind (not counting Tetris Attack). Great 8-bit colors and music. How old is the Tetris creator now?

I think level 37 was my top. Or was it 47. My sister went farther though.

You might be thinking of Tengen or Gameboy Tetris. There are no official accounts of anyone being able to survive level 29, known as the death screen, in original NES Tetris. The pieces fall to the bottom so fast that even if you hold L or R from before the piece appears (this skips the initial movement delay entirely to aid in placement) .. the piece will only move a square or two to the left or right before hitting the bottom. Interestingly, if you do manage to survive (has been demoed by people using emus and tool-assist), the level 30 appears as level 00, level 31 is 0A, etc. Level 19-28 is at the bare limit of playability, and 29+ is uncontrollable. If the game wasn't so sticky, you could wiggle pieces around after they touch, a la the TGM / Tetris Friends style, but NES Tetris pieces have the stickiest style I've ever seen. The instant they touch anything, they're locked down and the next piece rockets down.

I used to play battle tetris all night in the dorms in undergrad. Baddest ass game that I can't find now...
