AT&T gets a lot of shit, and maybe some of it is deserved, but I just wanted to quickly share the phone call I had today.
I activated a first gen iPhone on a month to month a couple of months ago and just go my second bill. It read as almost $90 which seemed a little high so I looked into it and saw that although they were charging me for my 1500 texts, they weren't counting them. Remember that the original iPhone data plan came with 200 free texts, so that was all that was being counted. I had 450+ texts on a 200 text plan so was hit with a $15 overage fee.
I call into AT&T, and after having to listen to their menu for a minute or two I get straight to a rep at about 1pm EDT. I lay out the situation, and he asks me if I think I need all 1700 texts that I had signed up for. I told him no, it is just that 200 isn't enough, and neither is 250. 450 would be cutting it a little fine, so I opted for 1500. So what he does is this, he drops the 200 off the plan, and then makes an ad hoc combo with the unlimited data and 1500 texts, knocking $5 off the price. Then he waives the $15 fee off the bill. At this point I am more than happy.
Well then he noticed that my account said that I had sent in a request for a discount (I work for a govt contractor and am eligible for govt discounts) but it had never been applied. So, he pushed the paperwork through, and then credited me an additional $12 to cover my first bill as well.
So my bill went from $90 to $60 in just a few minutes and my continuing bills are only going to be around $70/month.
I hope that I don't need to call in often or really ever again, but frankly that was one of the easiest CSR calls I have ever made.
