The kicker is that in countries that aren't obsessed with killing machines and have had guns removed, gun violence is insanely low compared to here.

The kicker is I have more than a few guns in my house. Never once have they unlocked the safe they're stored in, nor have they armed themselves, and more importantly they've never gone on a shooting rampage.

They have been properly used to kill game to feed my family and friends. Years ago that included some less fortunate people (though these days it's frowned upon by the government).

That is simply not true and you know it.

Remove the Detroit, L.A. and New Orleans murder rate from the stats at see what you have.

As for the opening post, a good article does not misrepresent the facts.

Eliminate gang related shootings and suicides by gun, and America doesn't have gun death problem.

"Two-thirds of all gun-related deaths in the United States are suicides. In 2010, there were 19,392 firearm-related suicide deaths, and 11,078 firearm-related homicide deaths in the United States.[6]" (wiki)

You wouldn't know facts if a little kid in walmart was walking around with them.

You do know the "AR" in AR-15 doesn't stand for assault rifle, right? Just checking...

as·sault ri·fle
noun
noun: assault rifle; plural noun: assault rifles1. a rapid-fire, magazine-fed automatic rifle designed for infantry use.

^ Let me know when an AR-15 does this.

Pretty much, yeah. You combine a gun worshipping culture with elitism and authoritarianism, add a bit of government paranoia and things of that sort, antisocial behavior or other mental illness, stir, and you got a rather potent brew.

What generates these killing sprees is pretty obvious to people outside the US, americans themselves tend to get hung up on the "don't you dare to blame my precious, precious guns!" step and never proceed from there, and are therefore generally unable to see the big picture.

How long have you lived in the US?

Looks to me like we have a mental health crisis that needs to be addressed.

Like it is in VT where there's no restriction on gun carry? But being from NJ with strict laws you shoot each other. Maybe you ought to move to a place which is obsessed with killing machines since they don't kill each other like you in NJ. If there's an obsession it's on your part.

I agree. I wonder how many suicides turn into homicides when people want to go out in a blaze of glory. I expect most mass shooters were on the verge of suicide, and totally expect to be shot in return, but decide to get revenge for their miserable lives.

We have a problem because we care more about controlling guns than the people being killed. We place a low value on life and in some places slitting your throat would get the same reaction from those there as shooting, which is about none. You could be clubbed to death like a baby seal and no one here would care. Shot? That's a different story. Your death would then be a way to address a far more important issue, and that is some people don't want others to have guns.

The article doesn't really draw any conclusions (except the often used allusions to the availability of "high power military assault weapons"). The graphs focus only on the weapons. They don't provide a timeline of incidents/year. They don't explain the socio-economic status of the shooters. It's all about the tools of the crime. Not very thorough or insightful.

This. I see very few facts in this article.

Stupidity 101 for the mentally handicapped here:

Every shooting - is a mass shooting. If someone shoots with the intent to murder, they intend to kill anyone that was witness to it as well - or anyone that gets in their way. Nobody walks into a Walmart, shoots one clerk and then walks out.

It's the same mindset that doesn't care if people are slaughtered by the tens of thousands, until there are a few people killed by a chemical weapon. Then we're going to get super serial.

Those countries already had insanely low gun violence compared to the US. Logic fail.

Fail is that we keep focusing on the guns. If we didn't have them we'd just blow shit up because having to do a little research on google isn't going to stop anyone with a mass killing mentality. That's what we have to look at.

Except countries with way less guns do not have this problem.

It's then we get "sensible leaders against gun violence" who want to kill more people than spree killers have in all our history and expected to be admired for it. Now that's screwed up right there.

1. Guns have not been taken away in NJ. If they were, like in Britain, violence would be down.

2. VT is the least populated state in the country, with almost completely rural living. Comparing it to anything is absolutely retarded.

3. I've never touched a gun in my life, yet because I live within the borders of a state that contains gems such as Camden, it is somehow my fault personally? Brilliant.

Were they obsessed with killing machines like we are? It is almost as if you didn't read...

Define killing machine - cars, trucks, suvs, smoking, other tobacco use, drinking, eating fatty foods,,,,.

I obsess over having sex with my wife. That does not mean I going to rape the lady down the street.

People are going to kill one another...the end.

No matter what is done there will always be killings. Most people who own guns don't look at them and say "Hey, this one would be nice to mow down Mr. Joe...I'll get this one!" just like most people who buy cars don't look at getting a truck and saying "This will easily run over X amount of people before the engine quits"

There are crazies out there, there always will be, and as a percentage they will continue to grow as our population increases.

The increased pussy footing and "My boy is special" mentality leaves them free to roam and go crazy as they wish. Some people snap, yes, but some people are just born crazy and will ALWAYS be crazy.

Long story short: People suck, always have sucked, and always will suck. Take away any preferred killing tool and there will be another one to replace it.

Because we have a low value on life in too many places. As I said it's almost non existent in VT where I carried half a dozen concealed handguns without a permit of any kind and it was perfectly legal. I was with a few others similarly armed and we didn't go BOO YAH LOOKY WHAT WE CAN DO. We didn't have ceremonies to worship them. We went on a frozen lake and shot some cans because it was fun. We went into a diner and brought them in (Yes unloaded) because we didn't want to leave them in the car. I told the waitress who looked at me like "why the heck tell me?" and then took our order. Madness? No, because where I was people have this funny idea that killing someone is wrong so they don't do it. The gun is immaterial to that philosophy. That's what we have lost, a widespread belief that killing is wrong. It's just another thing in the news anymore unless a gun causes it of course. The people who died? Their deaths are immaterial in the philosophy that guns are wrong. This a control issue. It should be a moral one.
