Good anti-virus program?

I'm looking for a good anti-virus program that does a good job catching both viruses and malware, but isn't a huge resource hog that's going to slow down the PC I'm building. So far BitDefender and Nod32 have been recommended. Anyone have experience with these two that can give me a review of either or both? Thanks in advance!

See from what I heard Norton is NOT very lean on resources, which is why I was looking elsewhere. I've always used Norton in the past, but that's because I've always bought pre-built PCs that came with it. Since I'm building for the first time I'd like to try something new.

Thanks for the tip Corky, I've also heard good things about NOD. I might go with that.

mechBgon that guide is great! Thanks a lot! This is my first build, do you know of (or have you written) a guide similar to this that can tell me good settings to tweak windows when I first install my OS, as well as freeware that are pretty much must-haves for a new mid/high-end gaming system? I've tried compiling a list from off the top of my head but it's a short one.

Norton Internet Security 2009 has been completely redone, and I have seen it in operation....very worthy of a new look....As for any previous version of NIS Never Never Never......
 
save your money get comodo firewall and avir antivirus both wont eat up resources and make them the best internet security suite but comodo has both antivurs and firewall i dont know how good the antivirus on comodo side I disabled it because I use avir antivirus anyway......if you like them please thank me because I deserve a thank you 🙂

PAID - NOD32 + "Free" Comodo Firewall

NOD32 is great and so are these free products.
 
avir antivirus is good one and very low on resource and if you dont mind annoyed popup begging you to buy avir antivirus pro for small fee. but it bugs you one time a day

Which can be conveniently disabled by using a software restriction policy in Windows. 😀

NOD and Kaspersky have the highest detection rates. Either one would be a good choice. I'm using Kaspersky on Vista and XP and love it.
 
We use Symantec Endpoint Protection at work and while it's great deal better than older norton software it's still not as good at finding infections as Bitdefender or NOD.

Case in point: Last month I had a computer that I KNEW was infected but SEP said it was clean, ran a scan using bitdefender and it found 10 infections.
 
jamie8dc everyone are fighting each other right now but why not try out demo I know Symentic and Kasperky do have antivirus demo for you to try out I dont know if NOD32 have a demo
 
I'm using Avg free edition and keep a Malwarebytes installed for spyware. The scans are always in the background and I'm running virtually anything during this time. The same happened when I was using my Pentium D with 2GB ram. I never had to re-install the Windows so far.
 
I'm starting to wonder if AVG is as good as it used to be. Two years ago everyone was saying nod32 or avg and avg was free (I think there was a free v. of nod32 then) now I see no one standing up for AVG. Looks like AntiVir is going on all my computers.

Need to go through the security tutorial for routers too. Plus I didn't know about the Administrator account thing. I've always setup an account with admin ability and used that. Guess I need to change that also.

As far as antivirus goes I think AntiVir will do but how about mal-ware or spyware? Think I saw something about that on the last page I'll need to look into. Great thread. 🙂
