Good AMD 939 Socket Overclocker

Just wanted some input at what the best overclocking 939 AMD CPU overall has been. I am looking at purchasing a cheap AMD 939 Socket AMD for a server and want some decent OC ability. Are the Venice 3500's better OC'ers then a Winchester 3200? I seen a lot of people have success with Winchesters.....is this CPU better for OC?

opteron 144/146 FTW!!!!! but in general it is usually frowned upon to o/c a server....

Opteron 144/146. 144is 1.8 (9x multiplier), 146 is 2.0 (10x multiplier).
Opterons are the the absolute best deal right now for OC'ers.

Well I am not going to be using Server 2003 on it - just using it to run XP Pro (I think, unless Server 2003 is better for this application but think its an overkill - but this is not a SERVER per say) to act as a "media hub" to stream and be a central storage area of all my MP3s, DVD movies ripped to HD for my HTPC and Extender in the bedroom and Xbox360 in the kids room, home movies that are in mpeg and downloaded/recorded TV from the MCE HTPC. I bought an CM Stacker case by Coolermaster that can hold 12 Hard Drives and already have a motherboard thats an AMD laying around (an old DFI Lanparty). I dont want to spend a ton of money on it since its just going to sit in the closet. I just want the most bang for the buck. Looking for the "sweet" spot in money for cpu vs speed. No need to overkill it. I think a 3500 or 3200 should be sufficent. Then I need to find some cheap DDR 400 1GB ram to toss in and I am good to go. I actually am thinking about upgrading the ram in my currect rig (OCZ PC4800 Plat Edition) to something better to OC since I am not really having much success with this ram. To like some VX Gold OCZ ram or something but I am not sure really. I do know I want to get 2GB of ram since I do play some BF2 and want to match it all up nicely. So I might be able to get another type of ram to get better performace at 2gb.

Another question on how many watts would I need to run a simple HTPC with one HD? Becuase I am thinking about getting a 350W Antec phantom Power supply to put in the HTPC to quit it down and put that 500W PS in this new server build. I am looking for a PS that is almost completely silent.

Well I now am looking at dont want to spend more then $200 on the CPU - so I need help deciding between these:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3500CGBOX - Retail

or

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3500BPBOX - Retail

(dont know the difference between those two) or

AMD Opteron 148 Venus 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model OSA148DAA5BN - OEM

or

AMD Opteron 148 Venus 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model OSA148BNBOX - Retail

Can someone steer me towards the best?

The Opteron 148 will out-overclock the 3500+ easily. The difference between the two Venice chips is the core revision used. I'm actually not sure what CG is...I had always thought CG was a newcastle and not a Venice.

Do you think they run cooler overall too since the voltage is lower?

CG is the new E4 venice, with half the L2 cache disabled, or is it with one of the E4 Manchester cores disabled. I cant quite remember but Kris did a side article here on AT a while back with regards to this new core being used.

So far without having seen any OC reviews etc for the new E4 Venice. I would recommend an Opteron right now, easily the best choice and doesn?t cost anymore than an Athlon equivalent.

EDIT: I would recommend depending on your budget either the 144 - 146 - 148. The 146 is the best bet when OCing, as it has the best bang for the buck factor.

in all reality if you have a old dfi lanparty(assuming nf2) board laying around, pick up a 2500 barton(or any barton) in the fs/ft forum. streaming, even mulitiple feeds will be strictly bandwidth limited and in your case the hdd and cpu will not be limiting factors. throw in a large hs w/ a 92mm fan and slow it down(the fan), put in a couple of the largest fans you can put in your case and, again, slow them down and you will be fine. i suggest the 2500 because it was the earliest barton 333MHz xp cpu and probably the cheapest.

also, for bf2 ram usage, have a look at the rig in my sig 😉

that is because they are probably sold out atm, check out www.tankguys.biz to preorder. they are on here frequently and are nice and easy to deal with if you go that route.

Bob - I bookmarked your BF2 guide to check out later. I am now researching if its better to get 2 1gb sticks or 4x512mb sticks for OC and best memory speed.

For the new media hub/storage server, ATM I am just changing and upgrading parts in various machines. Like taking my 500W PS from my HTPC that has a fan and install a 350W Fanless PS in it - then putting it in the the CM Stacker case which has huge fans on the side and in the back so cooling shouldnt be too big an issue (which is going to be put in a closet). I have 6x500GB drives ready to install for storage. I know the CPU is not a huge factor on streaming but I dont mind paying $200 for an opteron 148, which I think for sure I am going to get now as it seems to be the best bang for the buck and can OC it if I want. Then since I been wanting 2GB ram in my gaming machine I am going to move the 1gb I have now into the new "server".

BTW the board is a DFI NF4 Ultra Lanparty board so no limitations there.

no probs, just didn't want you to spend $$$ where it wasn't needed, the 148 is a good cpu.

as far as ram, do the 2x1GB as most if not all a64 have some type of an issue with running 4sticks whether it be running them slower(i think this was fixed in the newest cpus..) or running them in 2T vs 1T(1T is better, search around these forums for detailed reasons).

with all those hdds are you going to run raid 5? wouldn't want you to lose 2-3TB:shocked🙁depending on raid setup) of data...

No raid - but then again if a drive failed I would have the CDs or DVD to rerip to HD. Maybe I would loose some TV recordings but its not the end of the world if I lost my season of Boston Legal or 24! 😉 I will make sure to backup any personal videos and/or pictures on my USB drive that I have once a month but other then that I am not too worried about data loss. I have had it happen to me in the past but I have made sure that my important stuff is BU'ed.
