I don't see any problem with comparing a 5970 to a 480, you have to test the best each has to offer. Once there is a faster Nvidia video card than the 480 then that will be tested against the 5970. ;)

The Guru3D GeForce GTX 480 3-way SLI review was cool, I enjoyed reading that review very much.

Why not compare the gtx 480 vs the 5850?
Or mabe the gtx 280 vs the 4770?
How about the gtx470 vs the 5970.

or the x2 4850 vs the gtx 480?

Simple answer ! You compare cards by their price brackets.
Give or take what 50$ on the high end? Is that reasonable?

You don't compare a 650/700$ 5970 vs a 509$ single gtx.
Where do you draw the line.

You could however compare crossfired gtx 470's with a 5970.
700$ vs 679$
Or a 5830 & 5850 crossfired vs a gtx 480. 540$ vs 509$

How about two 5870's with a 5830 in trifire (1,040$) vs gtx 480 in crossfire. $1,020

I think you get my point.

I don't see any problem comparing 4 gtx 480's in sli (2,000$ and the fastest setup on earth) vs 4 5970's (2,000$ and can't be done)

get real guys. DO you realize how dum that sounds?

The peoples champ is those 5850's that were bought for 259$ shipped 5 months ago and overclock to 5870 speeds. Thats the real winner.
Lucky sons of bitches. :)
Now most cards are priced right where there supposed to be price vs performance. (except the 5830)

Two 480s over a 5970 is a MASSIVE power envelope increase!

NVidia have done a bad job. ARM are the best in the world for CPU power envelopes and are looking into server entry. I have a 5850 on a 24" TFT at 1920x1200. It is ok with my phenom 965 oc to 3.88GHz.

I have yet to overclock it but I have not installed Crysis yet although I can crossfire when funds allow.

As bad as top of the range cards are, NVidia have done a dreadful job on the Fermi core. Triple SLI 480s???? 1200W PSU anyone? Insane totally insane. I just hope that NVidia sort the power issue or we will only have ATi soon. It is not good!

In the UK you can get a gtx 480 for £449 (pre-order only) and a radeon 5970 for £499 (in stock). So for an extra £50 (which is nothing when your talking about high end video cards) you could buy a 5970 instead of a gtx 480 which is my reason for saying the gtx 480 should be compared to the 5970. Prices are from http://www.overclockers.co.uk/

WOW sucks to live in the UK. $760 dollars for a 5970 and 685$ for a gtx 480.

Newegg has 4 gtx 's in stock for about 500$.

and 2 5970's in stock for 700/750$.

+1

In my country 5970 is N$6900 and GTX480 is $6900 (U$936) that is the only place that has 480s on pre-order and it happens to be the cheapest place selling 5970s

Is fair to compare them now? :p

In other words, the ATI cards are pretty much the same price (slightly more in the UK, but then that's the case with most things), whereas the nvidia cards are hugely higher priced in the UK (and, I believe, across all of Europe).

The point is not that things cost more in Europe (which they generally do) but that these nvidia cards cost _way_ more over here, pretty much reversing the pricing position of the gtx470 (£330) and the 5870(£310), for example compared to the US.

I suspect that's because there aren't very many of them and nvidia is mainly releasing those few in the US, which they rightly see as a more significant market as far as publicity and reputation is concerned. By only releasing them in the US they can make it look as if there are more of them than they actually are. That's my theory - otherwise the pricing is just incomprehensible - or are nvidia fans in Europe more fanatical than nvidia fans in the US?

Another moronic fanboy post!

Whats the point you're trying to make with that statement?

All I'm trying to say is not everyone live in US, things are are different in other places. Where I live and perhaps in the UK its fine to compare a 480 and a 5970 cause they are in the same price bracket, which as you stated yourself is one the main reasons to compare to cards.

So I'm a fanboy cause a 480 costs the same a 5970 and I see it okay to compare them per YOUR pre-requisites?

You need to take a look in the mirror.

My point thats in different corners of the world prices will vary.

I wasn't talking to you , but to answer your question (which is a no brainer). Yes for the same money only a moron would buy a gtx 480 over a 5970 for the same price.

And I stand by my pre-requisites.

I'd ask a mod to lock up this thread that is in dire need of some Ex-Lax. I think it's run it's course. Off course that is.
