Good 5.1 HT receiver for < $400???

I think I am going to get at least a pair of Pardigm Atoms to start and will eventually get rear speakers and a sub. I have been looking at receivers and they are all pretty expensive. They guy in the audio store tried to sell me a Yamaha RX-V640 but I am not sure if it's any good and if it's what I really want.

Any HT freaks have suggestions? Keep in mind I am not or will never be a hardcore audiophile.

I'd check out the Denon 1803 or 1804.

never a bad review... that is a wicked amp.

you got a good thing going there with the speakers... Paradigm rocks.

You can get a refurb Onkyo TX-SR700 for under $400. The H/K AVR325 would be a good choice, but is slightly more than that.

Good choice with the Atoms BTW.

I have the 3803. You really can't go wrong with Denon. Awesome receivers.

Read the threads on the refurbed Onkyo receivers in Hot Deals. I don't think there has been a single post of problems with a refurb'd player. As a matter of fact, my receiver was brand new as far as I could tell.

I personally wouldn't get a refurbed receiver.
Yeah, I avoid reburbed stuff myself.

There's absolutely no reason to avoid refurbished equipment.

If you could state a valid reason why, then I'll listen.

- Refurbished equipment is re-inspected and re-certified to original factory standards. In fact, since they are usually returns or defects, any potentially defective component has already shown its weakness and has already been weeded out, thus reducing the further chance of failure.

- Onkyo, at least, offers a full warranty on all items, refurbished or non. Plus, I got an extra year of coverage for a reasonable price.

Wow, looking for Onkyo on Amazon they have a bunch of reburb stuff too. What's with Onkyo and all the reburbs?

Some Onkyo receivers had a defect in them that would play havoc with the LFE channel if memory serves. All the refurbs have this problem corrected.

Hence one situation where refurb would be more desirable than new. New, you run the risk of having to send the receiver back ASAP due to a manufacturing flaw.

People seem to be really happy with their Onkyos.

Yeah, my dad has owned a couple, and I'm always hearing good things about them - I dig Onkyo for around that price 🙂

I have the 3802, so another vote for Denon here.

Denon 1803 for $300.

A refurb Harman-Kardon AVR-325 or AVR-520 from the Ebay seller "Harmanaudio," the factory outlet seller of HK. In other words, when you buy from Harmanaudio on Ebay, you're buying directly from the factory, so there are no worries.
