I've been 3d modeling for about 6 mo. now, but would like a better program.

What d'you all prefer/reccommend? Something somewhat easy to learn but very powerful.

Thanks!

Maya is widely used, SoftImage or Lightwave are cooler, 3D Studio Max is also big. I use Maya.

What do you mean you don't meet the requirements? Just download it.

Maya requires 512Mb of RAM...

I'm really liking softimage, tho. :) Thanks novon

Is 3D Studio hard to use? Take alot of time to understand all its functions? seems a bit intimidating

ProEngineer is great, although I don't really think it does what you need.

Go to your local Books-A-Million and pick up one of the clearance books on it.. its easy when you get the hang of it.

There's just a lot to know. Once you figure out how everything works, then you have to learn what's the best way to go about making something. There are just so many different techniques it's not funny.

Here's a little something I did up in 3dmax. Everything is from scratch.

Id say go with 3dStudio Max or Maya.

Max and Maya are both better than Lightwave IMHO, and Softimage XSI costs way to much. If you decide to pirate Id still say max, its the easiest of the big 3(Max, Maya Softimage XSI) to learn.

psst... $10 000 licence

Im not sure but I think he meant the trial version of XSI. The most widely used in the video game industry is Max, Maya is the most widely used in Movies. Maya is gaining more support in video games because it cut its prices in half. Softimage isnt really gaining any traction in video games because its to costly, though some Japanese developers are using it. Not sure about XSI in the movies though. Not that it matter what program you decide to use. Companies tend to hire based off talent and not based on what programs you know. They can always train you in the program they use. Id still say go with Max.

Lightwave. No plugin searching most of what you need is already incorporated in the core program.

student licence for XSI is $500 a year. Regular price wise XSI is compariable to Max & Maya. The free version of XSI 3.0 is clearly superior to both GMax or the free version of Maya.

Since I have used all 4 of these top 3D packages, I can say XSI has the best user interface along with Lightwave. Great keyboard short cuts for all the functions and no confusing icons. Maya has the worst UI & Max is not that far off. Animation, organic modelling are some of the strong part of XSI. ILM & PDI are still using version of Softimage and it was used in all their movies since the Matrix.

That's not that complex at all. Just a bunch of primitive shapes and splines. Does Rhino do NURBS/NURMS?

As far as I know, rhino ONLY did NURBS curves. And you're right, that's a bunch of boxes, hardly difficult.

This was fairly difficult to model.
This took a while, too.

nah it wasn't complex. that's why it only took two hours. But yeah, rhino is an amazing NURBS modeler, and it's incredibly accurate. It was the first modeling program I ever learned.

check out Rhino3D.com

this is something i made about 3 years ago.. I lost the actual model in a computer crash, which pissed me off to no end and it kind of turned me away from modeling for a while.
