Any suggestions? I already know of some dealers to avoid around here..

I'll be taking her to the Hyundai dealer first thing. But basically she has $9k to put as a down payment to lower the monthly payment as much as possible. Nothing in excess of 15-16k total is acceptable. She needs something cheap and reliable. Those are the two main factors. Options, fanciness, power, style etc are all unimportant.

The main factors are - to have as low monthly payment as possible, to have the most reliable dependable and affordable ride possible overall. Of course having the NICEST ride with those factors would also be a plus. In other words, Kia can go to hell. Man, they had the most cheapass cars I'd ever seen when I checked out their dealers.

In any case... the Hyundai Accent is cheap, but not as cheap as the Kia (quality wise). It's not all that bad, and if you take it with power steering and a radio, it's not bad at all considering it supposedly gets 47mpg (!!!). doesn't surprise me with a 90hp 4cyl in a 1800lb car.

So what would you suggest? I doubt I would find a Civic or Corolla at $100-200/month with $0 down and 0% interest, so don't even suggest them. I want the cheapest best deal possible and usually the 'huge names' do NOT offer those.

List of possible cars to test (but including the big name ones) :
Accent, Civic, Corolla, Echo, Matrix, Sentra, Rio, Lancer, Protoge, Aerio, Cavalier, Neon, Escort, Focus, Sunfire, Ion . . .

Which would you pick and why?

I would consider the Hyundai Elantra.
People who's driven them like them and they're pretty peppy.

9K down and about 4k in loans on the elantra gls.

You might even be able to pickup a dealer demo or a loss leader for cheaper.

I'm talking 16k CANADIAN. $16k USD is not acceptable. So what most of you think cars at $16k they aren't options for my gf. You guys have to think $10-13k in US dollars.

Perhaps you should edit your post to reflect that

Hyundai Elantra GLS is like 13.5 starting.

consider a dealer demo or a loss leader
you can prolly have it for 13k

plus they have a lot of promos going atleast here in the US

WTF is this 5-10 warranty bullsh1t? Are us canucks getting anal rapage or did I just not understand the dealer here.. I didn't hear ANYTHING about 5 or 10 year warranties at ANY of the dealerships. They all had 3 year/100,000km. Anyhow.. Im not gonna edit my post. You'll just have to read two or three replies to find out that I'm talking CDN not USD. 😛

An Elantra would be a good car, but it wouldn't get 50mpg now would it? What reasons would one have for going with an Elantra over an Accent? Other than "it's a nicer ride".?

if i had that kinda $ I would go buy a car off of a private seller. You can literally save 4 to 5k$ by doing so.
you can still get the same kind of warranty or buy a car that still has existing warranty.
I have seen many many good deals on cars like a used Maxima for 10k$ but dealers want 17k$

I would say a used quality car. No need to buy new and take the hit of the first year of depreciation. Consider a used 1999-2001 Sedan from a quality manufacturer. You will be much happier.

Don't walk into the dealer and tell them you have 9k to put down, they will take you for a ride. Go to the bank/credit union and get a loan. As long as her credit is OK, they will probabaly finance anything as long as it's new and she puts the 9k down. With a bank loan you can haggle the final price and not have to worry about what kind of BS they are pulling as far as payments and interest rates.

Well, they do call it "The freedom of America's best Warranty." I guess they don't mean NORTH America.

How about Saturn? They have a "no-pressure for the customer" kind of sale's theme thing going. And their cars don't look that bad.

This is so true. Lie, cheat do what you have to do. Do give them any info up front. DONT TELL THEM YOU HAVE 9K to put down!!!

First of all I won't even consider a dealer that doesn't treat me right. If he gives me the cold shoulder or some dumb attitude, he's crossed out in my book. The people who treat me right - respectively and like a real customer - are the ones who will have the highest chance of selling me a car.

I may consider slightly used as well to save on the depreciation.

I looked at the title of this thread and nobody has asked what he's trading her in on?

You guys are slipping.

I must be more tired than I thought, cause that made no sense at all...

5-speed civic lx coupes can be had for $13.5k USD easily...if she can drive stick, this is the best bang for the buck in terms of reliability AS WELL AS resale value.

You did say your gf has $9k to put as downpayment. Even for a decent Civic or Corolla you can get well below the $200 mark at 0% interest.

Just consider that 0% usually comes out to $16.67/mo for every $1k borrowed on a 60mo loan.

So if you get a $15k Civic (out the door), put $9k down - you're looking at a $100/mo payment for 60 months.

Of course my calculations aren't exact, but it should give you and your gf a good idea of things.

I wouldn't get Hyundai... they NEED the 10 year warranty 😛

I guarantee you'd have less problems with a Japanese car like Honda or Toyota.

If that was the case, wouldn't you put less down to raise the monthly payment? You can get something for your money while paying at 0% interest. So, you'd be making money by putting less down and letting it draw interest out of something.

I'd recommend the Matrix or the Protege. A)They're fun to drive, B)You can fit more stuff in them on avg than the rest of the cars u listed, C)They're probably going to be more reliable than the rest (I heard that Protege's are imported from Japan and don't have Ford parts) and Toyota is extremely dependable. Don't worry about MILEAGE on a car, for Christ's sake. There was a thread on ATOT about mileage and SUV's... on avg, SUV's only pay about $400 more in gas a year. For your car class, how more are you going to spend on 25-30mpg vs 47?? My time is worth more than worrying about gas.

My best advice would be to buy a 1-2 yr old Matrix or Protege, no more than 10K miles if you can help it. You should be able to get your best bang for your buck (hopefully even a decent warranty)! 😀
