I love Windows XP, but I'm looking for a change. I have W2K Pro and heard that its more stable since its older and they've patched everything up already. I don't play games anymore, all I do is use Winamp, browse the internet, and watch video clips.

I realize that Windows XP makes everything a whole lot easier to use and there's better features, but I'm mainly looking for stability.

Any ideas? or should I just keep XP?

Not looking for Linux or anything like that, but I want something Windows based.

Edit: Ok, well I'm gonna stick with XP because of the blue screen factor. Ever since I've used it I only got BSODs when its a hardware conflict, and I don't wanna see a bsod ever again. I'm playing around with XP and trying to get it like 2k. Someone said something about being able to tweak XP to run just like 2k (since they're both based on NT 4.0 I think...)

What I've done so far is killed off the special effects like fading because all it does is take up resources. I got back to using the classic start menu because its less cluttered. Am also using the classic logon screen. Are there any websites that teach you to "slim down" (lack of a better phrase) xp back to 2k?

does it crash often or something? i use windows xp and for a lot more things than what you are saying and it has crashed only a handful of times, none of which were windows xp's fault afaik

but i do turn off my computer when i'm not using it so that might have something to do with it

I went back to 2k from XP cause I got tired of XP crashing. 2k IMO is a far better OS than XP. Yes I know you can tweak XP to run just like 2k, but there are other subtle things about 2k that I can't get in XP.

Nope, I don't really see anything wrong with it. Been flawless ever since I've used it.

XP just feels bloated to me, and I'd like to change my OS to something more simplistic.

Oy? I probably wrote my original post weird. I said I didn't want Linux, I'd rather want something Windows based.

Gonna edit that now.

well simplistic then you'll have to go down the tree, your only choice afaik is 2000 and it's not all that different from xp if you tweaked xp

i say just turn off the extra/unneeded features in xp that can be turned off and stick with it. i didn't like xp at first but after tweaking it around it's not bad

Blah, Blah, Blah......another geek wants to be different so he steps back in time. What the hell are you doing in XP....I have systems that have run 6 months with nary a beep and only had to be rebooted due to a power failure.

Bleh, I don't wanna turn this into a debate. I'm gonna install W2K Pro in the morning.

I'm not trying to be different, XP was an unstable OS for me. I have no idea why, and I don't care to find out. I went back to 2k because I prefer it over XP.

after xp ive never wanted to go back to 2k.. xp is better and more stable
just gotta tweak it a little, ie turn off like 99% of the services, and change
everything to "classic" as well.

xp has never crashed for me, ive had uptimes of 30+ days and pc lag free.

the only problems i've ever had with XP relate to network things... for some reason listing directories on my machine takes a ton longer when i have a few other computers sitting near it

Just like all them people who still run win 98 SE cause it's fast and stable...

I like XP. I've had it running for 60 days+ before with no problems. It's not quite as good as linux, but then again how many people need their computer on for 60 days straight? I do it just to see how long it can go.

Don't forget OS/2 it actually had a version of windows 3.1 built into it. It probably wouldn't work on todays hardware and it would probably be hard to find great programs for it compared to windows and Linux, but there is still some stuff out there that will work with it.

IBM had to pay MS somewhere around $35 (IIRC) for each Windows 3.1 that was bundled with OS/2.

I believe there was an OS/2 that was unbundled, for people who already had Win 3.1.

When IBM marketed OS/2 as a better Windows than Windows, it was true. Unfortunately for them, it wasn't a better 32-bit Windows (Win95 came out a year later).
